Let Us Hold A Minute's Silence For This 'Ring-Wrecked E39 BMW M5

The E39 M5 isn't an endangered species just yet, but regardless, it still hits us right in the feels to see one meet its end on the Nurburgring...

A commenter claiming to be the passenger in the BMW at the time of the crash said that the E39 “is repairable but it is damaged too much,” which we’re taking to mean the car is a write off. To add insult to injury, the crash also left the driver with a €1300 Armco repair bill.

It’s when you slam the fence within the tracks. You need to pay for every replacement.

That understeer though …
For those who don’t know what are the costs for a crash on the Nurburgring, here there are.

Base fee for attendance of ARMCO truck: €150
• Removing damaged armco: €10/metre (x2 or x3 or x4 for multiple-height sections)
• Replacement armco: €31/metre (x2 or x3 for double/triple height)
• Removing damaged armco posts: €5.10 each
• Replacing armco post: €39 each
• Safety car attendance: €82 per 30 mins (car + 2 people)
• Circuit closure: €1,350 per hour
• Recovery truck: €190 (inc VAT)
• Hospital stay & air ambulance: Let’s just say, do NOT go there without travel insurance! (Though a European Health Card - which replaced the E111 - may cover the hospital bit.)
Everything except the recovery truck is then subject to 19% VAT.

Whoever wrote this article, and ‘quoted’ the passenger on youtube is wrong. The car is not a write off. The car encountered slight damage on the front and was’nt able to be driven back home. That’s what i meanth with being damaged too much. The engine is perfectly fine, and was able to drive afterwards the crash to the first exit. Aside from some bumps, bents and / or scratches, it’s still possible to fix this car and enjoy another lifetime of this BMW. Thank you, the Passenger.

Btw: It was’nt our choice to drive a wet track. The day started with a dry and sunny morning. We did 3 laps. I did 4 in total in my RS4 B5. It was this lap that caused the slight oversteer and smash into the Armco. There is hardly any room on the nurburgring for any corrections at all. Please drive the ring yourself on a wet day.

The people who film and sit there all day “encourage” drivers as well, for some more glory shots for their channel. I think we saw up to 10 people behind the fence cheering and waving the moment this happend. The crash itself was very very soft and the damage to the ring is just nothing. Just some paint scratches, but nuburg charged him the full price for it. Lesson learned, he’s very sportive, car’s already being fixed for another time Nurburgring.
