Turning Lane Assist Into A Makeshift Autonomous Mode Is A Fantastically Stupid Idea

This driver - possibly in Poland - thought it'd be a great idea to trick a VW Passat into thinking he or she was still behind the wheel, effectively turning the lane assist and adaptive cruise control features into an autonomous mode

This is a trick we’ve seen before. By jamming whatever that object is in the steering wheel, the car thinks the driver still has a hand on the wheel, meaning the lane assist feature happily continues to function without throwing a hissy fit.

This bodge, combined with the adaptive cruise control system, effectively turns the B8 VW Passat into a semi-autonomous vehicle, and the driver is even able to hop over to the passenger seat and let the car do all the work. The systems aren’t designed for this purpose though, so I’m sure we don’t have to explain further why this is a really, really stupid idea…

Actually this is basicly what Tesla’s Autopilot does. It’s a combination of lane assist technology and radar guided cruise control and GPS. They’re just doing the Apple thing with it, you know, taking something which exists and selling it as something more than it actually is.
