24% Of You Rate 'New' Top Gear's First Episode As 1/10

Top Gear got off to a shaky start at the weekend, and judging by two polls we ran, you guys didn't really take to the revamped version of the motoring show

When we posted our Top Gear live discussion on Sunday evening, we were taken aback by the scale of the response. So far the thread has clocked over 550 comments, and if you have a look through, there’s a bit of a theme: most of you guys don’t seem at all keen on the revamped show.

Wanting to quantify exactly how CTzens found the first episode of Top Gear with Chris Evans as host, we ran a couple of polls, both of which produced startling results. In the first we asked you to rate the episode out of 10, and an astonishing 24 per cent of you picked ‘1’. In fact, 75 per cent of the 11,000+ people polled gave the episode a score between 1 and 5.

In the second poll we wanted to know how many of you are planning on tuning in next week. Just 18 per cent of just under 5000 polled said ‘hell yes’, with 33 per cent selecting ‘nope’ and 49 per cent ‘currently undecided’.

The silver lining is we’re yet to see Chris Harris and Rory Reid - who both excelled during the online-only ‘Extra Gear’ segment - in the main show. If anyone can improve the show in the eyes of CTzens, it’s them.

I’ll watch the next one. It’s not because I liked it. I’m just an optimist! I have a feeling the viewing figures are going to tank hard.

I just saw it and Ill try to be as neutral as possible. It wasnt horrible, but it wasnt brilliant either. I found most of the content was pretty nice, especially the new rallycross track. Things like the viper/vette missile lock versus didnt feel like a versus at all, just showing to great cars running around. I mean, we all know those things are scripted (it felt very similar to the tank chasing Clarkson in the Range Rover), but doing such a thing in an AIRPORT, which is very wide open, except for the hangars, smells a bit. The rest felt pretty good for a first program.
Now on the hosts… Although I found Matt a bit stiff, he was doing pretty fine, and it felt like it was him, trying his best, in a natural way. On the other hand, I personally dont know Chris Evans a lot (Im from the Basque Country and Ive never known of him until I saw him in a Top Gear episode) he transmitted me he was trying very hard to be like Clarkson, and I found his really loud speech (or screaming) very annoying, and some comments he threw out of his mouth, I didnt like at all (like the catering joke at the beginning). I think he could do much better with a more of his own personal touch, and some naturality.

I enjoyed it, I hope they can get to something really nice, but theres much work to do yet. New Top Gear is better than none as mabny have said

I gave the show a 6/10 but I hadn’t seen it… I was just curious what the results were and since you can only see it when you participate, well… If more people did the same as I did, but less generous (not unthinkable since the general hype was not very positive to say the least), that might explain the high numbers in the 1-5 region

How can you describe the format as “revamped”? A studio makeover in the style of the original, and a change to the track isn’t a revamp. The majority of the format clings to the Clarkson era (despite then hypocritically taking swipes at the former hosts). A revamp would be a re-arranged theme tune and intro style, a re-imagining of Stig’s intro, a redesigned Power Lap process… What we got was a disrespectful hanger-on of a show rather than an innovative revamp.

My review: I like the intro. Clean, well edited solid. Ecept for the introduction by Chris Evans. I’m not gonna go on about him. I don’t like him, I think he doesn’t have what it takes. He’s cringey and forced. I’m done. I like Sabin and Matt. Sabine being the crazy Hammond type is cool, and Matt being the Clarkson is even better. The only probelm is that I felt like the dialouge was forced and cringey, and that none of the presenters were able to express themselves. I felt like I was watching an episode of Super Friends. I don’t like it, but I’m willing it to change and gain it’s own personality. Get rid of Evans, he has none. The new track is great, the Stig intro was bad. 3/10. It may very well improve. :)
