5 Reasons Why Driving Alone Is Totally Awesome

It's great to have company on longer road trips, but sometimes, it's simply better to drive alone. Here are five reasons why...

1. The human blowoff valve

I fart, you fart, Donald Trump is a fart, so let’s get this one out the way first. Driving alone means that you don’t feel obliged to hold anything in, which will make you concentrate better on driving. Why will it make you concentrate better? Because allowing your body to do what it wants to do will stop you from getting a distracting stomach ache.

So the next time you let loose and a passenger gets mad, simply tell them that you did it because you love them and because holding it in would have made you more likely to crash. That’s science.

2. Weight reduction, bro

Driving alone means that you’ll get the best power-to-weight ratio you can. This is especially important in a small car where power is lacking. Take my MX-5 as an example. Standard, this 1000kg roadster produces around 130hp (1.8-litre, UK-spec), and with my 77kg weight, that’s a power-to-weight ratio of around 121hp per tonne. Factor in the weight of another 77kg person on board, and that drops quite dramatically to 113hp per tonne. Not only does passengering up reduce your fuel economy, it also makes your car way slower.

3. You call all the shots

If you want to keep driving until the tank runs dry, then go ahead. But you can bet that a passenger will not make this possible. Toilet stops are commonplace as are a ‘five minute stretch break’ that are never just five minutes. If you’ve got somewhere to be, you’ll get there quicker alone.

4. Just being your weird self

For most of us, being behind the wheel of a car is our happy place. And when we’re happy, we like to be uninhibited. Driving alone, then, means that you can rock out to Phil Collins without being judged, or dance in your seat like a mentalist (while wearing your seatbelt!).

5. Nobody complains about your driving!

There’s NOTHING worse than having a critical passenger who just loves to point out a harsh gear shift, or who gets scared at the smallest things (even though there was nothing to be worried about).

As they say, the only negative thing in your life should be camber, so ditch the passenger and drive happy!

I like driving with my friends, we can talk and listen to music and stuff. But I love driving alone and just driving how I want to aand where I want to and I can listen to music as loud as I want to and I get to decide the song!

I believe my father’s the WORST passenger there is.
First off, he always complains (literally never shutting up) and is a “footwell braker”.
Also, he constantly plays around with EVERYTHING in between the glovebox and the steering-wheel (meaning: a lot of buttons and switches, including the gearstick), occasionally grabs the steering-wheel (when he doesn’t like my “line”), and even just randomly pulled the handbrake three times in the past four months, because according to his “instinct” I was going too fast…

Wow man, if that happened to me I would punch the passenger right square in the face and make them walk, I don’t care if it was my dad. Touch my steering wheel/shifter/e brake? Potential to hurt the car, the people in it or around it. Unacceptable.

Best thing is, you can make blowoff valve noises and not have to worry about passengers being creeped out. #NaturallyAspiratedProblems
