Update: This Could Well Be The Slowest Rally Crash Ever

Robert Kubica was tackling SS3 of Rallye Monte Carlo when his Ford Fiesta RS WRC slid off road in tricky, icy conditions, hitting a tree at such a low speed it looked like the crash was filmed in slow-motion...

Yep, not a good start to the first rally of the 2016 season for ex-F1 driver Kubica. He was competing in the first of Friday’s six stages when the crash took place and he is expected to be out for the rest of the day. The footage above was quickly uploaded to YouTube by a fan and a few pictures of the scene and damage also surfaced on Twitter:

Update:

Kubica’s crashed car was then given a helpful hit from Elfyn Evans.

I laughed at this… This is not the Melons way to win, but it is the funny way to win.

You should totally be a rally driver with those skills!

…if only everything worked as easy in practise as in theory.

They were on tyres for dry conditions, after 6km of driving on the stage they came to the part covered with ice and drove around 1km in those conditions. They were in the left slow turn and there was more grip there, so when they approached that right hander he didn’t expect to be the passenger at ~35km/h going through that turn with no throttle and no brakes applied. He also said that he forgot to switch ALS after left turn/before right turn so it was kinda “pushing” the car.

All that info comes from the interview with Robert.

Reading some comments here about a guy who basically drives with one hand and won WRC 2 championship in his debut season with no experience on gravel whatsoever, makes me feel like I’m not among petrolheads

I guess that goes to show that its not simply the lateral grip of the tires that allow rally drivers to do what they do but instead their skill in angling and position the car
