N47d20 with the twin scroll turbo set up found in the 123d. 200+ bhp and real world 50+ mpg and 400nm.

Pulls like a train when needed, economical when needed

Taunus V4 is the best 4 cylinder. But that was almost 50 years ago..

The Ford Duratec/Mazda MZR engine (2003+ 2.0/2.3L variations). Good power and torque, EXTREMELY tunable (Duratecs can easily reach 280 bhp normally aspirated), and very reliable. There’s a reason why more kit cars and smaller car companies (including Caterham) use this engine than any other 4-cylinder…

it’s a fantastic engine for the money with tuning potential that’s hard to beat.
