6 Reasons why owning a Toyota Supra SUCKS!!!

I was lucky enough to be able to live my dream of owning a Toyota supra at the age of 18, this was an amazing experience and I went onto having two Supras within the same year along with my girlfriend. They are a fantastic car and we live and breathe them but they do have their downsides.

1. The Reputation & Attention

http://i3.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article5557297.ece/ALTERNATES/s1227b/Fast-and-the-Furious-Toyota-Supra-for-Sale.jpg

You’re not just buying a car when you buy one of the most talked about vehicles in the automotive world, you’re buying into a reputation and a lifestyle. Whenever you go for a drive in the car, you always get looks and stares; this attention is good and bad. Of course we all love to show off a little and turn heads, but this brings unwanted attention. You cannot leave your car in certain places due to fear of it being vandalized. Cops are also a side effect of Supra ownership, and every single police officer here in Australia will double check the vehicle to see if there are any defects present. I am on my Red Provision license in NSW, and have been pulled over 8 times in the course of 3 months, and not issued one speeding fine, only 2 defects which prove painful after a while…

2. They are slow…

http://www.rallyhaus.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Lexus-LFA-and-Toyota-Supra-Mark-IV-4.jpg

A lot of people (and drivers) think that they own a really fast car when they see or drive a supra, and the attitude kind of follows this. The mindset of a lot of people is that they think they’re in the Fast & Furious when driving these cars but the truth is, unless it’s got a turbo and is highly modified, a new Toyota Camry has more hp and go than you have!

3. They are expensive

http://image.superstreetonline.com/f/17165263+w660+h440+q80+re0+cr1/modp_0711_25%2Bsema_2007_day_3%2Bphoenix_gold_toyota_supra.jpg

Saying this, Supras are reasonably priced to buy here, but living with one is a whole other story. Registration and insurance is extremely expensive on these cars, along with the other regular maintenance of keeping it running. Also most owners of Supras like to modify the vehicle, and doing so always brings police attention with defects which present a higher cost in fines/passing the defects etc. Speaking of which, modifications amount to being very expensive, as once you start, there is no stopping as the aftermarket business for the Toyota Supra is massive!

4. The owners

http://d1r57ja1amoclf.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/arrrlan-supra-car-throttle-meet-3.jpg

There are many great people you meet through owning a Toyota Supra by joining a local club etc, but saying that, there are many people out there that get a big head when behind the wheel of one. So many people think that they have a faster car than anyone else just because they own a Supra and always want to race you or talk smack about the car you may own.

5. The modification war

http://www.fastcar.co.uk/fastcar-assets/2011/01/modified_mk4_toyota_supra_016-592x394.jpg

As explained in point 3, the aftermarket scene for the Toyota Supra is vast, which allows for any thinkable idea to become reality if you have the cash. This creates an issue where you start to modify your car, and there will always be that one person with more modifications than you; this leads to a never-ending tale of eating 2-minute noodles for dinner every night. Another factor is people tune their Supras to have such high hp these days that if you leave your car stock, it’ll be very slow.

6. They are overrated

Whenever you mention Supras, everyone’s minds rush to the Supra from Fast & Furious movies. If you don’t own a mkIV Supra, people won’t even recognise it. We need to remember that there was the mk1, 2 and 3 which were fantastic cars, and not everything is about the mkIV. In addition, many websites post photos of the Supra saying that they are the greatest cars in the world etc… But in truth, there are many more great and diverse vehicles also on the market today.

This post should have a giant ‘OPINON’ heading at the top…
IMO, it sounds like you don’t really know what you are talking about mate. For starters, the new Camry has less power than a 2JZ-GTE, unless of course you own the N/A model in which case yes, the N/A Supra is slow af. Also Supra’s are actually relatively cheap to modify compared to a lot of other cars. Again IMO if you can’t afford the upkeep maybe you should have brought a different car…

This post is click-bait at it’s finest by someone who based all their points on personal opinion. There is no evidence to back up any of these points and the whole post is really just vapid and insubstantial. Better luck next time kid.

A lot of cars that are considered “legendary” in the car enthusiast scene are horribly over rated and are a huge pain to maintain and live with a few examples are the Supra, the Skyline and the RX-7.Nice article btw !

As a non-turbo MKIII supra driver, I can totally agree with almost all of these. However, the owners issue might just be who you’re associating with! Find a new owners’ club, if that one’s not working out for you.

And as for them being slow, just find someone who’s slower than you to race and feel good about it! (i.e. non turbo RX7 FC, stock S14, etc.)

Another Supra owner checking in and I’ve got to say i don’t agree with a few of these points! Mainly point 2 and 3.
Forgetting the N/A because its the turbo supra that has the efame, it really isn’t an overly expensive car. The price-performance is really quite good and you would be hard pressed to find better performance for the money, and bonus, it still looks amazing today.

I’ts definitely not slow! Having owned an N/A supra on my P’s and now a big single turbo supra on my opens the N/A supra really did punch above its weight. Mine was a 1993 model making it 19-20 years old through my years of ownership. Yet it gave some newer cars with bigger engines a real run for their money, regularly, namely ve sv6 commodores and 350z’s and it ate toyotas 86 for breakfast. Moving onto the turbo supra, yes the stock turbo supra is a little under-powered compared to today’s sports/performance cars, but it will cost a HELL of a lot less to bring your supra up to spec with them then to buy a new sports/performance car in the first place. Making it fast is relatively inexpensive when compared with other cars. My old R33 GTR for example would have cost me twice the amount to bring it to my Supras power levels. There are not many other cars i can think of that you can bring happily up to 600hp for a similar amount of money. Exception here being the xr6 turbo.

I Love my supras, however i fundamentally agree that they are not perfect, for 1, i hate how old it is getting, the is dash starting to lift, other little things that are starting to show their age on a car that otherwise still manages to look modern. It’s rather impractical for anything other then a weekender, but that being said, alot of sports/performance cars are.

Overall, when you remember just how old they are starting to get, they really are still an incredible car and deserve the reputation and efame they have!

I also have a supra and well, I can see I disagree to most of the things said here.
1 - attention can be good or bad, but it is not a car I leave unattended in some back alley, so I don’t have to worry that someone vandalizes it. also, only time the cops took notice of it, was when they (probably) heard the open wastegate screaming while my friend drew a giant “11” on the parking slotwith the back tires. :D
2 - even in stock form they are not slow. sure the NA variants (especialy auto) won’t be anything new but you don’t get an NA Supra and then whine about it being slow :) get the turbo and mod it. that’s what they are most useful for - making tons of power.
3 - well, they kinda are, but not that different from other performance cars. I might say they are even cheaper. (we don’t have to insure it here so don’t know about that)
4 - I’m pretty sure the supra I’ve got is faster compared to majority of cars here and I don’t deny it :) not a monster, but it is plenty fast for a daily driver.
5 - yeah. you just know what you want, do that to the car and be happy, or else it will drain the wallet. that’s not the fault of the car imo. what’s more, I rather love the fact that there are so many options to choose from in the aftermarket.
6 - imo, they are definitely not overrated. It feels “like just because it’s popular and everyone likes it, it isn’t good” kinda deal. I get it - mainstream stuff isn’t loved by overly individualistic types but supra deserves all the glory it gets. it can withstand tremendous power, can be set up as a drift car, track car or 1/4 mile monster and it does everything equally good. also it looks timeless - much better in real life than on pictures.
