Toyota Is Selling Brand-New 40-Year-Old Three-Door Land Cruisers In Some Bits Of The World

It’s an exciting time to be a Toyota Land Cruiser geek. Arriving soon is the retro-inspired J250, with the recently-revealed Se concept hinting the model will be getting a more luxurious, road-focused electric spin-off in the near future. What if you prefer yours old-school, though?

Well, the good news is that, despite it now being on sale for 40 years, Toyota is continuing to build the 70 Series into 2024 and now even bringing it back to Japan. You’ll even be able to buy it as a three-door ‘Shorty’ 71, provided you’re in the Middle East or Australia.

Granted, the car has had a fair few updates in its years on sale but certainly retains the charm of the very original. Goodies included on this new 71 include LED headlights, hill-start assist, a 9.0-inch infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay plus a part-digital driver’s display.

More importantly, it’s had some safety upgrades too. Dual front airbags now feature, along with automatic emergency braking and a lane departure warning you’ll probably want to turn off within five minutes.

Despite the modern updates, a decisively old-school engine sits at the heart of the Land Cruiser 71 is a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V6, with 228bhp and 266lb ft of torque through a proper six-speed slushbox automatic. There’s an appropriately sized set of 16-inch alloy wheels, too.

For those in the Middle East, you’ll be looking at 169,900 AED (approx. £36,000) to get behind the wheel of one. Considering a base Land Rover Defender 90 starts at £57,450, it seems quite the bargain.
