It’s been a few months since Mercedes dropped the new AMG GT on us, going even more toe-to-toe with the Porsche 911 in its new SL-based form. Finally, it’s on sale, and it’ll cost you £164,765.

Sounds punchy, but that’s in full-fat 63 flavour - complete with a 577bhp, 590lb ft of torque 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. That’s sent through an all-wheel-drive system, a change from the rear-driven first-generation GT, good for a 0-62mph spring of 3.9 seconds and a 183mph top speed.

Those match the drop-top SL 63, unsurprisingly, and like that car, you’ve got a rear bench taking this from a two-seater to a 2+2 for the first time. We can’t yet get the SL 63 in the UK, though, so there’s at least one distinct reason to get excited for the GT.

Your £164,765 also gets you some fairly extensive tech, too. Rear-axle steering and an electronic limited-slip differential are included as standard, with AMG’s Active Ride Control suspension - using adaptive dampers and semi-active roll bars - making an appearance.

21-inch alloys are standard on UK-spec cars, albeit with different designs depending on your chosen spec level. We’re fans of the gold on Launch Edition cars, albeit those come in at £180,765. Crikey.

At least with that, and mid-spec Performance trim, you’re getting a carbon ceramic brake system with 420mm discs front and 360mm rear. Entry-point Premium Plus has steel discs measuring 390mm up front and matching the diameter of the carbons at the back.

For the anoraks among us, you’ll be able to distinguish the two by the yellow callipers with the steel system and typical AMG gold on the carbons. Premium Plus trim also gets a retractable spoiler, while Performance and Launch Edition get a fixed rear wing.

No word yet on when customers ordering today will get their Mercedes-AMG GT 63, although it’s worth noting it’s about £5,000 more than the Porsche 911 Turbo with a little more power at its disposal.

If that price is making you baulk, keep your fingers crossed that the more affordable, albeit less powerful GT 55 could find a way to the UK. Failing that, an SL 55 can be yours for £147,715.
