Could Forza Find Its Way To PlayStation?

It feels a little surreal asking the question, but could Forza find its way onto PlayStation? There’s seemingly an outside chance, with reports from within the gaming industry suggesting that Microsoft is planning to bring several of its Xbox-exclusive titles across to Sony’s console.

As reported by XboxEra, Starfield is the biggest title under serious consideration for a PlayStation release alongside the previously-announced ‘Shattered Space’ expansion which is expected to arrive sometime in 2024. Perhaps this isn’t all that shocking, with Xbox boss Phil Spencer claiming the space RPG was going to be a PS5 exclusive before Microsoft acquired developer Bethesda - albeit it’s widely touted that Starfield was one of the biggest reasons for the purchase.

Alongside Starfield, it’s also reported that the upcoming new Indiana Jones is now being considered for a PS5 launch a few months after its release on Xbox and PC, with ports of Gears of War, Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves potentially imminent.

There’s never smoke without fire, with Spencer timely announcing a “business update event” set to take place next week which will outlay the “vision for the future of Xbox” mere days after these reports first surfaced.

Now, we should be clear, there’s been no hard link to suggest any Forza titles are among the mix. However, at this stage, it perhaps wouldn’t be a surprise if the franchise popped up.

Forza Motorsport may be a tricky sell on Sony’s console. Not only did the latest title launch to a rocky reception, but it would place it directly in the firing line of Gran Turismo 7 - perhaps something Microsoft may not want to come up against, or Sony itself may not be comfortable with having on its platform.

Forza Horizon is perhaps a different prospect, though. Currently, there’s no direct first-party title from Sony on PS5 that competes with the open world, more arcade-style focus of the Horizon series. Its last attempt at such a game, Driveclub, was released in 2014 and had its online functionality shut down in 2014.

PlayStation players looking for a Horizon-style fix will need to rely on The Crew: Motorfest as the only major title in that space currently, although the upcoming Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown would present a second option. Clearly, then, there’s space for Horizon to thrive in Sony’s ecosystem.

This could turn out to be little but pure speculation but don’t be too surprised if we’re reporting back next week that Forza is making a PlayStation debut. A strange thought, but one we’d welcome with open arms.
