6th October 2014
I recently experienced a complete electrical failure in my ‘00 1.6 NB.
I was driving between 60 and 75 mph in heavy rain for about an hour.
Lights on, wipers on full and the sat nav plugged into the cigarette lighter.
Suddenly, the lights went out, speedo went to 0 (while in fifth gear, still going 70),
the rev counter flopped around between 3k and 0 rpm and the ignition and fuel system shut off.
The only warning light that was on was the battery light. After about 5 seconds everything was fine again. This happened once more, then it stopped (also stopped raining). It hasn’t happened since, but ofc i’m worried. Has that ever happened to you? Or do you know what it could be?
My guesses are either a short or loose connection somewhere or water getting inside somewhere.
Thanks in advance
If you’ve ever asked yourself, if you can do more than daily your MX-5 or race it around some corners, you’re in luck. I went to visit my Grandmother. On the other side of Bavaria. That’s 435 Kilometers one way. That might not be much for american standards, but for Germans surely.
Four hours to drive there, go to town a few times and then back. That’s 947 Kilometers.
860 of those were purely on the Autobahn, and let’s say about 100 of those were construction sites.
I drove alone, so nobody to tell me to go slowly and Taylor Swift to keep me company meant, that i pushed it a bit. As i have no idea how fast you can go with the roof up, I didn’t exceed 150 kp/h on my way up. That still meant 7.5 Liters/100 Km. Better than average, but worse than on another roadtrip i did.
Downwards there was bavarian sausage in the boot to transport home, so about halfway there i opened the roof to be able to go faster. Which, as i’m currently sick, seems to have been a stupid idea.
As you probably know, the Mx-5 is geared quite short. So doing 200 kp/h at over 6000 rpm at most might not have been ideal for the engine, but it is very possible. This resulted in almost 8 liters/100km, which is .5 liters better than what i do daily, 7 km to school. So for long range, that’s bad.
So to wrap it up, you can go on a really long journey and still be comfortable in an mx-5. You can even do Autobahn speeds. I don’t advise it, but you can. Seats and speakers are well up for the job, and lorries aren’t as intimidating as you might think. You might go a bit deaf, but that should fade away.
Anything i forgot you’d like to know? Ask away.
So yeah, i screwed up. I’ve got water in my Mk.2, lot’s of it.
The softtop that’s on it “only” leaks on the drivers side seal. A bit. Enough to wipe it off.
But as i put the hardtop (not original Mazda) on, it leaked massively on the passenger side window seal and on both sides at the B-Pillar.
I tried sealing it with silicone and tape-like stuff for seals. Nothing worked. Today i wanted to seal it even more, lifted up the floor-mats and there it was: The mats were full of water, the carpet was soaked.
I took the hardtop off right away, as well as the mats out. For now the softtop has to do, but that’s not ideal for winter, as it will be driven there, too.
So yeah, do you know how to stop leaking or it there even is a way? Thanks in advance.
