What i did in South Africa (late and long post)
Alright, so. Got a request to make a post about what i did when i was gone for 5 weeks in November/December in 2018. So yeah:
I did volunteering in the Kruger National park (Northern East South Africa, at the border to Mozambique) for 4 weeks. Was in two different camps, both about 40km away from nearest civilization. Nearly everyday we drove out on a pickup truck and would do tasks like counting animals or changing batteries of self-triggering cameras (as seen in the Grand Tour Colombia Special). I saw loads of really awesome animals and extremely rare animals, our guide in the first camp said we were one of the luckiest group he ever had. Second camp was awesome too, same tasks there. Unfortunately there were two guys making holiday there, which were extremely hateful against french people, i personally can’t stand such people and didn’t want to have anything to do with them, so i mostly hanged with a Belgian guy.
Story from the first camp: So we found Lions in the evening just infant of our camp (awesome). Later, while eating, we could hear their roaring and we were astounded by the strength of their voice and how near it sounded, even though it was so far away. Well turns out they sounded so near because they were. Nearer than you would want them. One of them jumped over the electric fence and was about 20 meters near us. “Everybody inside” was the next thing we heard and we all (10 people) went into the small building, which had just fly screen as windows. So that was exiting.
Luckily this wouldn’t happen in the second camp, since that one didn’t have an electric fence at all.
After these 4 weeks, i flew to Cape Town. Its a really awesome city, one of the best I’ve ever been to. From there i did a tour in a Toyota Quantum. We drove from Cape town to Port Elizabeth at the coast and back through the so called Karoo. (Desert like thingy) This took a week because we did a lot of actions (Sand boarding in Jeffreys Bay, Canoeing, Hiking at an awesome place, bungeejumping from one of the worlds highest spots where that is possible (i didn’t do that, im afraid of heights), Eating in a Township (i ate chicken feet lel), Getting hugged by elephants (just their trunk) or Visiting an ostrich farm (and feeding them. (btw they hurt when they pick you in the shoulder trust me)) also some other stuff. At the end of that, i stayed a night in Cape Town and went up the Table Mountain (One of the most awesome views in my life) and after that i sadly flew home.
Side note: I was traveling alone for the first time
Side note 2: 6 flights. 26 hours from my house to the one i stayed in at first
Munich -> London -> Johannesburg -> Hoedspruit, then
Hoedspruit -> Cape Town then
Cape Town -> London -> Munich
tl;dr:
-volunteering in South africa
-nationalpark
-seen awesome animals
-went to Cape Town
-week long tour at the southern coast
I can really just recommend it. If you ever have the chance, do it.
btw Kruger Park is malaria area and i didn’t have prophylaxis for it, yay im still alive
