`85 Porsche 944 odometer repair
Just finished fixing my broken odometer. My speedo was working, but the odometer and trip odometer wouldn’t count. I had to remove the steering wheel and both the wiper and turn signal stalks to get the gauge cluster out. The speedometer cable from the engine compartment was a pain to unscrew but once that came off the rest was easy.
The red gear seen on the 1st and last two pictures had moved down its shaft and had disengaged from the white worm gear thats driven by the speedo cable (geared down a lot). This apparently can be caused by resetting the trip odometer while moving. I don't believe that's a common issue with other cars, but it's another one of those "gotchas" I've seen and read about when maintaining these Porsches.
The fix was as simple as using a flat blade screwdriver to pry the red colored gear down the shaft and re-engage it with the white worm gear. Once it was in place, I used some superglue to hold the gear in place on the shaft, to help prevent it from slipping loose on me again. After putting it back together (putting the speedo cable back on was even harder than taking it off) I took it for a spin, and viola: my 944 that's been at 118525 miles since I bought it is now sitting happy at 118531. 👍😊
Huge props to Clark at clarks-garage for putting together a solid step by step guide and troubleshooting instructions.
