1986 Fiero GT Turbo Prototype #FastbackFriday

Regarded as the “Porsche Eater” of its time, this 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT featured a 2.9L aluminum turbocharged V6 engine that had a fully functioning intercooler located within its wing!

This Prototype model also featured the suspension that Pontiac initially wanted for the Fiero and was later offered in 1988. There are rumours about the suspension being designed by Lotus, but that is false.

The suspension was never a Lotus design. It was the suspension the Pontiac Engineers had designed in the beginning, along with what they had learned from their racing program.

This is a special Fiero. One of many concepts that gave us Fiero/car enthusiasts a glimpse of what was possible if the rules weren’t set strictly on this project.

“…Chevrolet’s fear that Pontiac would develop a Corvette fighter at half the price contributed to GM’s “pull the plug” decision”, according to GM insiders.

This car was ahead of its time. There were also some prototypes with light weight aluminum space frames (200lbs).

That would have made this Fiero GT a FAST and AFFORDABLE alternative to the power hungry Corvette.

What could have been…

If the FIero was to exist today, it could be one helluva car, since the Corvette is better that would have gave the Fiero more room to grow into what it could have been

It’s fun. We can make a similar Prototype…. I could try it out with the hood scoop. But the wing would be a challenge with the Intercooler. :p

I love the Corvette. But I think GM blew it by shutting down the Fiero plant. :/

That reminds me of the F1 intake off the NSX.

I’d say the Fiero and MR2 originally had their design influenced by the Fiat X1/9 Bertone. :)

That concept looks like a monster truck, why did they give such a good looking car that much wheel gap?

The new suspension geometry gave it the 4x4 look. It can be fixed with a slight drop :p my ‘88 has that problem too, only in the front. ;3
