Mercedes Hammer - possibly one of the greatest ever
As Chris Harris said in the video, if you were very, very rich in 1986, wanted to go really, really fast, but the M5 was too common for you, you could go to AMG and ask for this. Brutally named Mercedes Benz Hammer, was a heavily modified w124 chassis completely done in AMG factory.
In it’s most powerful edition it pushed out 375 horses to the wheels, which were squeezed out of bored 6.0 liter V8 engine with Bosch KE Jetronic. Car was tested a lot and made an average of 4.4sec 0-100km/h, 11.5sec 0-160km/h, 12.9sec 1/4 mile and a top speed of 286.4km/h. Such numbers gave super car producers of the day headache, and beat Ferrari Testarossa in every way possible, whether compared on a drag strip, circuit track or a backroad.
In my opinion it was a pinnacle of a car engineering of 1980’s and showed the world that you could be very very fast in a family size 4 door sedan.
Later conversions included 300E, 300CE and 300TE models. Mercedes showed the world that you don’t need to spend $212,960 on a Testarossa to go that fast, all you need was $161,422 and you would get a 6.0liter 32valve DOHC V8 Hammer which was feared by 911, Testarossa and Countach back in the day. And just to remember, in about 6 months this car will be 30 years old. Thank you Chris Harris for taking us for a spin in such a car and showing us what it’s like to sit behind the wheel of such a monster.
In my opinion, it is the only car ever deserving such a brutal and sound name.
