How reliable are classic minis?

I’m asking because I’m thinking about one for a first car. They are cheap to insure and are the only cool car I could afford (My other choices are things like diesel fiestas and Dacia Sanderos). Can they be mended easily?

They’re as reliable as you make them! If you just look after it and keep an eye on stuff they’re fine - mine never broke down. The only thing you might call a break down was a little bit of grit getting into the float bowl.

If something was to break, they’re a very good car to learn hands on skills. They’re incredibly simple, and just about every part is still made, and very cheaply by modern car standards. A few parts aren’t really up to standard as they aren’t genuine anymore, but most are just fine

That’s promising. It seems like an ideal first car to learn on.

The thing to look out for is rust though, they were prone to it, and it can be very serious. If anything you need to look for a solid car more than a mechanically sound one. Mechanical stuff is a lot easier for most people to fix, unless you’re any good with a welder and can paint. i don’t want to scare you off, they’re great cars, but you need to be aware of what you’re looking for. Heading over to The Mini Forum and looking for other posts looking for the same advice would be a good place to start
