Audi TT grill painting.
Hi everyone! I have to paint my TT front grills because the color on the plastic is fading. Any ideas on how to do this without removing the grills?
I’m thinking on using PlastiDip, what do you guys think?

Plastiadip is the best real way to do it cus if u bring it to a painter ans they paint it once rocks and stuff start hitting it the paint over that plasti will chip badly. U could have them remove the grill sand blast it and then paint on it but its $$$ and the paint could potentially still fade and chip 6month, a year, 2 years. Ive seen them last all lengths of time.
Thanks for the response! My car isn’t chipped at all, but I just wanted to bring the color back! Can I paint the grill with the badge on? Will I be able to remove the PlastiDip from the badge?

Is yours the high gloss black one, or they greyish one? And is it smooth or textured?
Thanks for the response! Mine is the greyish one, and is smooth!
Yeah u can paint the bage should be able to or u can cover it and be careful and paint around the badge and when u paint with plastidip u make it thick and it will come off once it drys like a rubber glove kinda once u peel on it
Ok, thanks!
Also of u are covering anything with painter tape tht plasti dip when dried will bond with anything like that and when u try to remove the tape it may rip off the plastidip since it’s rubber for beat results id apply the tape over what u dont want to be painted (i.e. the emblem the sides ect) and apply the first coat and before it drys remove the painters tape and keep reapplying the painters tape with every coat because nothint worse than finishing a job and having it ruined buy the now rubberized paint coat come up with the tape. Sorry for alot of typing
Thank you for the advice!
You can leave the tape on and on your last coat make sure you get a good and wet coat and peel the tape immediately while the coat is wet. Youll get crisp lines and a smooth finish. It worked great doing some stripes on my mini. Also use plenty of dip so it will peel! Id say close to the whole can for a grille!
Remove grill and use paint gun so you get best results.
The problem is that it’s super hard to remove the grills, especially the one with the badge!
Plasti dip does what you are looking for, but won’t last forever
I know, it’s just a temporary solution until I find a 3 bar front grill for my TT!
I’m not a fan of plasti dip and never will be, just going to throw that out there.
The ‘correct’ way to do this would be to remove the grille, prep it, and mix paint to spray.
That said, I doubt you have a mixing scale and the toners to do that XD.
My take? Remove the grille (sucks, trust me I know), prep it with a scotch brite or 320ish grit paper, then paint it with what we simply refer to as “trim black”. Its a fast drying paint that is designed for this kind of thing and is easy to use. I’ll check for an inventory number if you’d like.
Thank you for your help. I don’t need any inventory number because I will use my neighbor’s paint boot and use some of the paint left overs!
