One Of The Most Iconic Custom Cars Ever Goes On Sale - The Lincoln-Zephyr "Scrape" Custom

On July 24th, RM Sotheby’s is going to auction off the 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr “Scrape” Custom. It’s one of the most iconic custom cars in the world, and it’s expected to sell for around 400,000 US-dollars.

The Scrape was built in 1990 by former Hot Rod Magazine journalist Terry Cook and coachbuilder Ramsey Mosher. It took over 4,500 man-hours and five years to complete the project, which was a real-life replica of an iconic Hot Wheels car named “Scrape”. The two combined the front end from a 1941 Zephyr with the rear end of a 1939 model. The roof was chopped, and the car was equipped with a streamline widebody kit. The car also features the first ever hydraulic suspension which can lower the car’s body completely on the ground. Under the body sits the chassis of a ‘78 Chevy Caprice, equipped with a 5,7 liter V8 and a three-speed automatic. The interior features two-tone leather, air condition and electric windows.

Since being unveiled in 1998, the Scrape has won several prizes, has been featured in pretty many magazines and was even sold as a 1:18 Hot Wheels toy car. In 1999, Cook sold the Zephyr for $300,000 and it was displayed in the Los Angeles Petersen Automotive Museum until 2013, when it was auctioned again. On that occasion it was bought by Barry Weiss, for a staggering low price of less than 50 grand. Now, after restoring it for over 60,000$ he is selling it again. The car is in perfect condition and has only done 3,500 miles so far.

So, if you’re a fan of custom cars and have $400,000 laying around, you might consider buying this. I meanwhile will stick with the Hot-Wheels version.
