I'd like to buy a Toyota Celica (7th-gen, manual) soon. I was just wondering if you guys could give me some advice on running costs, things that can go wrong with them, and what to look for when buying. Thanks!

buy a 2003 model and above, some of the older may be burning oil
mine is a 2003 vvti with the 1zz engine (143hp) if sometimes i am racing and some i drive normal i get 11km to the letter of 98 petrol. if you are into racing and track day buy the vvtli (2zz engine 192hp) but try to find one with no leather .. it will not hold you in a fast turn.
not a single problem so far .

Brilliant thanks for the advice. It would be my daily so maybe the more economical one would be better, still sounds like enough power to have a bit of fun!

If you’re just going to use it as a daily driver car and not drive hard and fast, go for a GT model with the 1ZZ engine. But if your going to race it get the GT-S model with the 2ZZ engine because all the power is in the high RPM’s. So on the road you won’t really see the 2ZZ’s power very often.

And be careful with the 2ZZ’s transmission because it is easy to slide into the wrong gear and blow up your engine. It happened to a couple of guys I know with the 2ZZ. But otherwise their great cars.

Piston rings mate. They go bad make sure you ask. If its a gt (1zzfe) they burn oil like a mf. But theyre cery efficient. I drove 6,000 miles in 5 days in mine and it worked without fail. Good choice mate!

Alright off the top of my head from what I remember.
I drive a gts so my knowledge lies there and not the gt xD

00-01
Lift bolts snap and lift will not activate, buy the revised lift bolts from Toyota, easy fix. Also the shift gates are narrow compared other vehicles, be careful when shifting, I’ve miss shifted a few times.

02
Rev limiter drops from 8300 to 7800rpm and shift gates are wider

03-04
Rev limiter back up to 8300
Oem hid headlights were optional
Sun roof is now made of glass instead to some high tech plastic stuff “to save weight”.
Throttle cable updated to drive by wire.

05
Rev limiter back down to 7800

I have a ‘00 GT 5 speed. That thing is indestructible honestly. Ive been driving to try to make it quit so I can buy something else. And it just keeps going.
