Watch The Honda Civic Type R Remind The World Of Its Power

It's been with us nearly 18 months now, but the Civic Type R is still able to impress with its straight-line speed

For all its mad wings and many angles, the Honda Civic Type R isn’t quite as attention-grabbing as it was upon release. When it comes to hot hatches, the trouble is we’re all caught up in marvelling at the how Hyundai of all companies managed to make something as good as the i30 N, deciding whether or not the new Renault Megane RS is any good, and rubbing our hands with glee at prospect of the new Mercedes-AMG A35.

But to serve as a timely reminder that - when it comes to front-wheel drive hot hatches - the Type R is still a very potent thing, we have this drag race from Top Gear. In it, the hot Civic faces off against the aforementioned Hyundai and Renault, and it’s a very comfortable victory from the Honda.

Watch The Honda Civic Type R Remind The World Of Its Power

It mirrors the result of a Car Wow drag race we saw a few weeks ago, which also included a Peugeot 308 GTI and a Seat Leon Cupra R along with the i30 N and Megane RS.

As well as being the fastest in a straight line, the 316bhp is also the most capable of the current front-drive hot hatch crop. But is it the one you’d have?

I think the new Civic is one of the weirdest looking cars you can buy. Odd proportions, cheap looking rear lights, bizarre 3 pipe exhaust, and massive unforgivable fake vents front and rear. It might be a great driving car, but it’s certainly not pretty.

Can someone with mad photoshop skills please fix the Civic?

Delete the ridiculous fake vents, dail back the wing, normal exhaust, better lights, etc.

Maybe they should’ve waited until the RS Trophy came out.
I mean, we all knew the result of this race the moment the stats showed up.

The Trophy will have, as far as I know, it will have +23 hp, + 22lb-ft and weigh less 11kg.

Just curious how the mazdaspeed 3 and dodge caliber srt4 would compare to these new hot hatches. My money would be on the srt4

Stock for stock, both would bog down or spin away their power off the line as they lack the tricky engine management/launch control and high performance differentials, then they would get out accelerated by the lower drag, higher power new cars.

Both the MPS 3 and srt4 had remarkable performance at the time of their release, but compared to the modern machinery, aren’t quite there.

Regardless of how it drives it’s still a horrible car. From every angle it’s ugly. I love speed but that’s that ugly I’d happily take one of the 2 loosers. The trade off of ugly looks verses good performance just isn’t enough. Come on honda it’s about 10 years ago since you had a nice civic type r, plz get your act together
