Watch A Wheel Get Fired Into Red Bull’s F1 Canopy At 140mph

Red Bull Racing tried out its rival to the halo ‘thong’ F1 cockpit protector during first practice for the Russian Grand Prix, with its ‘Aeroscreen’ canopy hitting the track for the first time.

The team has now released some video footage of the canopy going through rigorous testing, including the device being hit by a wheel travelling at 140mph. Enjoy!

The wheel still hit his head, so surely the driver would still be injured?

I don’t see where the wheel hit the pilot’s head.

No it didn’t. It didn’t even touch the driver. The designers wouldn’t be that dumb.

There’s a “slight” difference between getting the wheel straight into the helmet and just getting in contact with it.

I like the design. It’s much safer and more aerodynamic than just the helmet and it looks way better than the ludicrous Ferrari solution. Looking forward to see it in action.

Redbull didn’t use it at the qualifying today, so why did they release a videp about it if they won’t even use it?

because, in the FIA Formula 1 rulebook, it stipulates what can and cannot be used, an exemption was made for practice one as the device is still under testing and would need to be homologated by FIA before it is able to be used without applying for an exemption in the rule book, and the exemption is so tight that Red Bull is only allowed one lap

But will it allow a quick escape in case of a burning vehicle?

Of course, the top is still just as open as it is without it
