Watch A Hyperloop Test Vehicle Do A 240mph Flyby

Footage of the newly re-branded Virgin Hyperloop 1 test vehicle hitting 240mph has been released, and it looks incredible

You can’t help but be fascinated by the prospect of hyperloop. The idea is you have a long, sealable tube, creating a near-vacuum and completely removing the problem of air resistance.

Then you use maglev technology to shoot a vehicle down it at high speeds, which is rather easy to do thanks to that lack of resistance. It’d be incredibly fast, and very efficient. Tesla CEO Elon Musk seems to think this is how many of us will be traveling in the future, but will we?

It’s a little too early to tell. So far all we’ve seen are scaled down models of the concept, like the recently re-branded Virgin Hyperloop 1 you see here, and the Space X/Tesla-branded test (below) run by a group of German students.

As we said when taking a look at 220mph testing footage from the latter setup, there are big hurdles to tackle like cost, technical feasibility and safety. But that doesn’t make it any less intriguing to watch people trying to make the concept a reality.

I don’t know about the rest of the car community, but I hope these work out and become pretty common. If a lot of people take this route to travel it will really reduce traffic for those of us who still want to drive, and for those who don’t enjoy driving mindlessly with the speedo set, there is another option. It is a win win

*by mindless driving I mean the freeway driving all at constant speed traveling across country which I see as the main use for the hyper loop

Could you imagine the G-force that it will produce? It is accelerating to massive speed in such a short time, our bodies may not be able to physically handle it, but, it is a really nice concept.

Agreed. More room on the roads for us petrolheads is never a bad thing.

Exactly. Let’s just hope countries which utilize anything similar don’t just tear up all the roads after we rely on these-we’ll all have to buy something off-road capable!

Controversial view: If this becomes a mode of transport in the future, I’ll happily commute in one over driving!

The hyperloop guys have to use extremely restricted power supplies, not really comparable

Fastest one was built at my university, the technical university of munich (the referred group of german students)
It’s actually a challenge between several universities

I once read a sci-fi book where they had a system like this (but it was written in the early ‘90s!). In that book, the “Express” system used a buried tube in vacuum and a bullet-shaped pod. It was used for transcontinental trips and was accelerated to nearly orbital speeds. (17,000 mph). Some terrorists attacked it by drilling into the ground, into the tube, and leaving the long drill bit in. The vehicle was completely destroyed with no survivors.

Why are there colorful lights in the tunnel if the hyperloop has no windows?
