What my definition of a "drivers" car is and what cars fit my definition of a drivers car.

So, what is a drivers car? To me. A drivers car is a car that sacrifices very very little in the pursuit of speed. It’s a vehicle that has a very few creature comforts. The most they have usually is AC, Touchscreen, some sound insulation and a nice interior (the interior bit is optional).

To me a drivers car should be focused. It shouldn’t try to be everything. It should be the best that it can be at being a very pure experience. It should compromise very little. It should be focused on going fast, not trying to make everyone happy.

So to me. The Corvette is not a drivers car. It’s not that it isn’t fast, it isn’t that it isn’t pure. It’s because it tries to be so many things it shouldn’t be. It tries to be comfortable, it tries to be quiet, it tries to be economical.

The Corvette is not an economy car, if you want that get a Prius C. The Corvette tries to be quiet yet it has a very loud V8 under the hood/bonnet. The Corvette isn’t a drivers car because it compromises Economy, quietness, and comfort for speed.

I’m not saying you can’t have a comfortable car that’s fast. But the C7 is heavier then the C6!. It’s heavier then the Viper for juice sakes.

And the Viper has a 8.4 Liter V10 for crying out loud. Yeah the Vette is more comfortable (for some people) and it is quieter, and it more economical. But the Viper isn’t trying to be those things. It just is. It gets 21 MPG, that may not seem impressive but think about the engine it has.

Yeah, that’s one cow of a achievement.

The Viper is trying to be the purest, fastest track car you can get. It’s not trying to be civilized. It just wants to be fast. The Viper is a very focused car. The Corvette by comparison isn’t. It’s trying to make everyone happy. Which isn’t a bad thing at all.

But my definition of a drivers car is this “A car that is purely focused on speed, no major compromises. It should be focused, it doesn’t try to make everyone happy. It should be involving to the few who dare to take the long way round”/

It’s the same with the GT-R. (R35), that sure as cow isn’t a drivers car. It’s to easy, it’s like cheating on your math test. Yeah you’ll get an A. But what actual work did you do to get that A? Nothing, because you didn’t put any actual work into your math test to get it right.

And that’s how I feel with thee R35. It’s to easy, it’s like modern aircraft, if all the computers fail on modern aircraft the plane would simply fall out of the sky. It’s the same with the R35. I bet you if half the computers failed the car wouldn’t want to start. The R35 in my eyes is a technical achievement, it’s not a car. It’s a droid.

Oh, and for people who say “well you still have to drive it otherwise you’d crash” or some mess like that. People like me say that in the metaphorical sense. We don’t mean it literally. (Duh).

Anyway, lets get onto the list of cars I think are true drivers cars. Also let the hate comments towards me begin. (Because I don’t expect anything more).

You’re cow right it’s a well put together article XD. It took me almost 2 hours to make. And I’ll add the GTI and the R32 (the GTI is an exception like the Miata).

nice article. my favorite driver’s car is the bugatti type 51. there are no modern assistances. you can crank start the motor, after a complicated starting procedure. then it is just you and the car on the road. no roof, no power brakes, no power steering, no synchromesh, no EFI, nothing! a pure driver’s car, I think it the most exciting car ever built. the supercharger and dual cams sound awesome, too.

No lotus? I’m surprised. They redefined drivers car to the purest form. But everyone has their opinions well written article. However, you did mention you not being fond of cars with super invasive drivers assistance yet you put in the new type r? Jmho

Look at it this way, the Type R is clever, not controlling.

I think that your idea of ‘Drivers car” is same as my idea of “track day car”

Yeah, their both pretty close, except one thing. You don’t need a “track day car” to have a drivers car.
