What Is Koenigsegg FreeValve?

Very interesting concept! But imagine a glitch in the system… then it’s just a matter of valve meeting the piston. :P

I’m sure there will be safeguards against things like that, if internal combustion engines live long enough, this is probably what we’ll have in them 😊

Non interference pistons or just having a failsafe

Wouldn’t this get better by using electro-magnetic valves? I could imagine it to be faster in opening and closing. Also, since you have to put wires on the valves why carry all the stuff in the car for producing and storing the air while you can activate them with current.
Sorry if my english is terrible.

The motors to drive those valves have to be powerful. That leads to weight. Imagine 32 independent motors for a v8, that’s a lot of top heavy weight.

What you said might work for boats and power generators, as low weight and mass distribution are not as important

Hmm, hopefully we get to see this kind of tech before electric cars take over. GM tried this technology back in late 1900s but couldn’t get it to work (probably because they didn’t have the tech we have today).

But BMW’s valvetronic and Fiats multi air system are the closest things we have. This tech works well in formula 1, so it should be able to make it to the consumer market some day

These type of acuators are already being used is diesel motors. Technology wins ! Imagine how many people told the wright brothers there will never be a practical aplication for their flying machine
