Volkswagen Is Building Two Rear-Driven Electric SUVs For 2020

Slice this however you like; it's proof that electric power and the SUV body style are the two most important things to Volkswagen for the next decade

Volkswagen is going to launch two new rear-wheel drive SUVs as soon as 2020, according to reports.

Auto Express quotes Volkswagen’s head of design, Klaus Bischoff, as saying that one will be a conventional SUV and the other will be a more rakish design based on the I.D. Crozz concept (pictured in red) first seen a few months ago.

Both will be offered first in a rear-wheel drive layout, which, for the same reasons front-wheel drive was introduced at all, is for packaging reasons rather than to go after lairy oversteer. Both will also get higher-performance versions with over 300bhp thanks to a larger motor on the rear axle and a second, smaller one at the front wheels.

Driving range is predicted to be around or above 300 miles per charge, and yes, they’ll be heavy. Strides have been made in recent years, but we’re not expecting miracles.

It had been rumoured that the I.D. Crozz concept could make production, but this is the first time we have any sort of official confirmation that the project has a green light. It also stresses the importance of SUVs to the modern car maker’s bottom line.

The two SUVs will follow the production version of the I.D. hatchback (above), which is due in 2019.

SUVs are just a fashion trend which will die out, just like the trend of having fins on American cars which became popular in the 50’s. Thing is, it easy to redesign a car to not have fins. But its very difficult and expensive to redesign an SUV into a car. I hope the car manufacturers don’t put all their eggs into one (SUV-shaped) basket.

Except that fins serve absolutely no purpose aside from cosmetic and that suvs are a well established trend based on common customers perception of utility and safety. So I’d argue it’s got a few years to go yet to say the least

Volkswagen is trying way to hard to be “cool” - hence these awful names. I.D. Crozz, I.D. Buzz, T-Roc…

I heard the new feature on this car is check battery light instead. Volkseagen confirmed it’s a first for the manufacturer.
