Volkswagen Could Build A Stunning Arteon Shooting Brake

While the Arteon saloon doesn't really get us going, news that positive sales could result in a shooting brake estate version suddenly means that we're interested
Volkswagen Could Build A Stunning Arteon Shooting Brake

Volkswagen is mulling over whether or not to build a stellar-looking shooting brake version of its new flagship saloon, the Arteon.

If the premium-style four-door saloon, which is meant to be a rival to the likes of the Audi A5 and Mercedes E-Class Coupe, sells well enough to justify the extra body style, then Volkswagen will sign off on the shooting brake.

Volkswagen Could Build A Stunning Arteon Shooting Brake

The front end of the Arteon saloon is a bit controversial and we don’t expect that to change, but from the side the shooting brake makes a great-looking shape, as imagined in our handy render from X-Tomi design. It looks low, sleek and purposeful. It even looks pretty fast even without turning a wheel. Let’s hope the reality ends up being very close to the render.

Compared to the estate, the saloon suddenly looks a bit forgettable, even if it does benefit from being a little different to the absolute German mainstream. On the other hand, if you’re wondering what a three-door Arteon would look like, X-Tomi has that covered as well.

The Arteon will sit above the Passat in the range, with petrol and diesel engines ranging from 148bhp to 276bhp. It’s set to feature cool technology like a digital dashboard, but many of the most desirable features will be relegated to the options list. A 9.2-inch infotainment screen with gesture control could be among them, at least on the lower trim grades.

There’ll be ‘extensive’ potential for customisation on the higher trim levels, because of course customers will also want the experience of buying their Arteon to be like buying a Fiat 500. Apparently. Prices for the saloon will start at £38,000, but don’t count on the high-spec estate that you really want giving you much change from £50,000 after options.

With the shooting brake you would have more than enough space to get the PARTEON.

I’d like to see an Arteon R fitted with something like the S5’s V6 or even a V8.

A VR6 would be nice, but a W12 would be pure madness

Or what about the 2.5L inline 5 from the RS3?

Remember when the term “Shooting-Brake” was mainly for cool looking coupé variants, and wasn’t just a marketing term for any estate?

For me a shooting break is a 2 door sport estate. From wiki:

“In 2006, The New York Times described a shooting-brake as “a sleek wagon with two doors and sports-car panache, its image entangled with European aristocracy, fox hunts and baying hounds,”

In 2011, Top Gear described a shooting-brake as “a cross between an estate and a coupé”.”

So it’s basically a fancier Passat Variant?
