Top Gear Executive Producer's Resignation Could Point To A New Car Show With Clarkson, Hammond & May

Andy Wilman - the man credited with making Top Gear the success story it was - has resigned as the show’s Executive Producer. The news comes almost one month after Wilman’s denial that he was leaving the show following a leaked resignation letter email that he sent to TG staff. In the email at the beginning of April, Wilman said:

For those of you who still rely on [Top Gear] for work, don’t worry, because the BBC will make sure the show continues. Our stint as guardians of Top Gear was a good one, but we were only part of the show’s history, not the whole of it. Those two words are bigger than us.

Clearly, then, it was always Wilman’s plan to quit the show following school friend Clarkson’s sacking. And now, rumours are rife that that Clarkson, Hammond and May could create a new car show with Wilman at the helm; Wilman was seen leaving Clarkson’s house with Hammond and May just after his Top Gear departure. May, however, said that the reason for the four men meeting was simply to ‘have a pint’.

May also confirmed that he and Hammond would not continue at Top Gear with a ‘surrogate Jeremy’. He continued to tell The Guardian that “The BBC haven’t completely closed the door on Jeremy’s return. They’ve not banned him or fired him, only just not renewed his contract for the moment. It’s a subtle difference but an important one.”

So who knows what the future of Top Gear’s four most infleuntial men holds? Perhaps we’ll see a new car series on Netflix or another channel, maybe the BBC will find some way of getting the show back without losing face (too much).

What we can be sure of, is that Top Gear will continue, albeit with a new name (most probably) and a slightly different format.

What are your predictions?
