By the end of the year, there’ll be an all-new ‘TCR’ version of the Golf GTI, and it sounds jolly nice. We’re looking at 286bhp, new body panels and enticing options including lowered suspension and a shouty Akrapovic exhaust system.

But if you’re feeling impatient, we’ve some good news for you. The car’s predecessor - the GTI Edition 40 Clubsport - is well represented in the classifieds, and enough time has passed for the joys of depreciation to take hold.

This one has done under 20,000 miles, and it’s already shed £10,000 off its original price, and that’s without factoring in options. Yep, the five-door, DSG automatic version was that much when new.

Don’t let the gearbox arrangement put you off: we ran an auto Clubsport for nearly six months, and found the ‘box to fit the car quite nicely.

With a 261bhp output, the EA888 2.0-litre turbo engine here isn’t quite as powerful as the TCR’s. But thanks to an overboost function, it is able to match the power output of its successor for short periods of time.

Clubsports also benefitted from a bespoke suspension setup, tweaked aero and a slightly noisier exhaust. The whole shebang is finished off nicely with black stripes either side of the car with ‘Clubsport’ lettering.

Sure, the Clubsport S is much more focused and exciting to drive, but as a strict two-seater, it’s not what you’d call practical. Plus, a used S is going to cost considerably more than a standard Clubsport.

Does this limited-edition slice of VW hot hatchery tempt you?

Hatch in a Hatchback

Anyone else feel that this car is perhaps a bit out of date now? We’ve had golfs with the same hp for almost 4 years now in the form of a MUCH better looking Seat Leon Cupra 280. And the second hand retail price for one of these is sub £15,000 So why bother with this ugly VW?

Last question could also be asked for the Seat?!
