This Odd Camping Bolt-On Is A New Way To Equip Your Mercedes X-Class

Just bought yourself a Mercedes X-Class? Forgot that you meant to buy a motorhome instead? Well, now you can have both... sort of
This Odd Camping Bolt-On Is A New Way To Equip Your Mercedes X-Class

After you’ve spent somewhere north of £30,000 on your shiny new Mercedes X-Class pickup, the first thing you want to do with it probably isn’t to put a mobile home on the back. But you can, if you like.

German motorhome conversion specialist Tischer has come up with this, erm, thing. It bolts to the structure of the pickup and presumably fits the Nissan Navara as well. It bolts on and can be removed whenever you choose, if you have the equipment to do it.

Pretty it isn’t. It’s like a caravan relic that you’d see going slowly mouldy on an old couple’s driveway. The likes of Airstream and Cowley prove that you don’t have to make portable living quarters look like they’ve been retrieved from a skip, but hey.

On the other hand the ungainly looks mean it’s surprisingly practical. Believe it or not there are two beds on board; a main one in a 150cm-wide alcove and a second that can be made up from three allegedly cosy seats.

Without mobile home: much better

The standing headroom is almost two metres and the kitchen area has a three-burner gas hob. Impressively, Tischer has somehow crammed-in a fold-away basin, a swivelling toilet and even a shower. People renting in certain parts of London would kill for luxury like this.

This is apparently just a concept, for now, so there are no prices or production dates. It’s being displayed at the Caravan, Motor & Touristik (CMT) show in Germany alongside another X-Class-based concept.

Let’s just say this one is a bit… more us. Built by VanEssa Mobilcamping, the module turns the X-Class’s load bay into a fully-equipped kitchen. There’s provision for cooking, washing up and storing a vast amount of food and beer. Because, let’s be honest, there would definitely be beer.

It’s too late to ruin the X-Class. Mercedes already did that.

You know what? I quite like it. It gives the car at least some purpose.

Those who really need a pick-up truck will get the cheaper Nissan version, those who want a Mercedes badge, don’t need an ugly pick-up truck to cone with it. So it made no sense.

But as a campervan thing, although it looks a but hideous, it kinda makes sense. I can see how someone, who doesn’t want to bother with B+E or C licence, could buy it and use occasionally - plus if they really do need a pick up truck, the bolt-on thing can be unscrewed (e.g. for use as a winter beater or something).

What’s not to like?

I agree on that, but why not buy a van and turn it into a/camper?

It makes more sense than you might think. Wealthy boat and horse enthusiasts don’t want to drive a Hilux. In Australia you can easily spend upwards of $70k on a Volkswagen Amarok Ultimate or Ford Ranger Wildtrak. The Ranger Raptor and HSV Colorado SportsCat will cost more again.

I don’t hate it. I mean yeah these things are always ugly but popular stateside because they’re easy to store and a great way to get out into the country.

The problem with that is that Mercedes doesn’t sell the X-class in the states 😕
