This Top Gear Deleted Scene Perfectly Demonstrates Why Keyless Ignition Is Stupid
I like to think I’m relatively forward-thinking when it comes to car technology. Massaging seats? Why not. Streaming music to the sound system via the Interweb? Sure. Those weird classic Grand Theft Auto style aerial parking camera view things? Hey, I love ‘em. But there’s one car tech innovation I can’t stand: keyless ignition. And this un-aired Top Gear scene (starts from 2min 42sec onwards, but it’s worth watching the whole thing due to the hilarious whale penis bone chat at the beginning) perfectly demonstrates why it’s stupid.
It’s a dilemma you’re faced with every time you get in the car: where do you put the fob, since you can’t stick it in the ignition? Inevitably, you end up losing it within the car (in a Peugeot 308 GTI for instance, I had the key disappear under the cupholder assembly), meaning you can’t lock the car. You tear the car apart looking for the damn thing, to the point where you start to wonder if it’s even in there, even though it must be since the car isn’t shouting key-related warning at you.
Some cars - such as certain Volvos - have a solution in the form of a slot to put the keyless fob in. But you know what also works well as a slot for your key? The god damn ignition.
So, if I’m ever in a position to buy a new car, I sure as hell won’t be ticking the keyless option, saving the £200 or whatever it is to spend on something more worthwhile. Like cheese.

I got to drive a 2008 Lexus IS250 yesterday and tried push button ignition for the 1st time and in a way i think its really cool but i am still a bigger fan of having a good old fashioned key

What’s worse about keyless ignition is that it aims to solve an essentially non-existent problem. Sure it can be nice to come up to the car and not have to hit a button on a keyfob to unlock it but it only works on the driver door. So if you are loading kids into your car (usually not into the driver’s seat) or groceries (while the trunk does unlock automatically you typically have to press the sensor to open the truck itself), the two situations where you DON”T want to have to dig out your fob, you still end up having to fish it out and hit the button.
Most modern cars come with sensors all around the car, so you can open/lock the boot or any passenger door as long as the fob is on the relevant side?

My previous A4 had keyless entry and ignition (push button start). I always kept the key in my pocket, never took it out. I don’t see this as a problem.

This is a clever invention which can be found on most garments produced after the 19th Century. This particular one is on a pair of jeans, but during winter months, you can also notice there are some Pockets on your jacket or even in your bag.
So how do you use a Pocket?
You put stuff in it. You can put your wallet, your phone and your keys, including the keyless fob for your car, in which case, you leave it there until you come back home.
How does it help to solve the issue?
You don’t lose the fob. It stays in your pocket (in your trousers, or jacket, or bag, wherever you can find a pocket) for the whole day and you don’t need to take it out when entering or leaving your car. This makes your life easier since you can get inside your car the moment you come to it, without having to take the key out. This is particularly helpful when you’re limited on time. or when the weather is bad, or when you have bags or something else in your hands.
That would be fine, but most of these fobs are giant and you probably wouldn’t want them stuck in your pocket all day. And what if you’re woman and wearing a dress? Or a man wearing a dress…

I have keyless entry on my daily driver and it works perfectly fine and I love it
Why can’t car manufacturers make little holder spots for keyless ignition cars, like a keyhole….or an ignition…?
Once i took a key from a costumer to check his car, i put it into my awsome pocket and checked the car…fine keyless go so the key stayed in my pocket and i did my job. Then i handed the car to the costumer standing outside of the garage and he drove home…half an hour later he called: he cant enter his car…the keys were still in my pockets…awsome engeneering…:-D
