This Rusty Third-Gen Mustang Sleeper Is Hiding A 7.5-Litre Big Block V8

This is one book you definitely shouldn't judge by its cover, because this extremely patchy-looking 1984 Ford Mustang is pretty damn fast down a drag strip

The third-generation Ford Mustang doesn’t always get much love, and at first glance this one looks more than a little neglected as well. But this 1984-model sleeper for sale in Boise, Idaho, has got a surprise beneath the bonnet.

It’s fitted with a 7.5-litre big-block Ford V8 that’s good enough to have launched the car to an 11.564-second quarter-mile a few months ago, the seller says. A small shot of nitrous, he says, and it’s a 10-second car. We’ll take that with the necessary pinch of salt, but there are at least plenty of receipts available from the build.

It’s heavily modified, despite the frankly rubbish condition of the paintwork. The Ford 460 engine was rebuilt a couple of years ago with ported heads, Holley twin carburettors, Edelbrock intake and cam mechanicals and a whole list of other performance mods. Linked to a rebuilt automatic gearbox it’s a budget drag machine.

The suspension has also been upgraded with gear from Lakewood, BMR and Competition Engineering. It seems to be a well put-together project designed to look like nothing much on the surface but packing a big ol’ punch underneath. We can get on board with that.

It’s listed on American eBay for a cent under $8000, although there’s the option to make an offer if you’re feeling lucky. On the eBay page there are plenty of videos of the car running, albeit in an earlier setup with electronic fuel injection. Some of the pics were also taken in that configuration.

I’m surprised that there are no crowd jokes yet
Usually people try to sneak in a “super hilarious” Mustang joke whenever they get the chance to do so

Not a sleeper. 7.5 badge, drag wheels, white letter Hoosiers, drop tank, sounds mental, pod gauges, dash mounted tacho, bonnet scoop, after market steering wheel, B&M shifter.

If you’re gonna build a sleeper, at least try to make it look slow
