This Is The 364bhp BMW M2 Coupe

Ever since BMW introduced the 2-Series, we’ve been eagerly anticipating a properly hot version of the gorgeous coupe. The M235i completely won us over a couple of years ago, so an M2 Coupe promises to be fantastic. Well, thanks to a magazine leak, we know a lot more about just how fantastic it’s going to be.

It’ll use an uprated version of the M235i’s 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine, here making 364bhp and 343lb ft of torque, with an extra 26lb ft available with an overboost function. That’ll make it good for a 0-62 sprint of 4.5sec with the six-speed manual, and 4.3sec in the seven-speed DCT automatic, while the top speed is limited to 155mph.

The gearbox, brakes, front and rear axles, crankshaft and pistons have all been borrowed from its bigger brother, the M4. It also has a wider track, wider wheels, and is 35kg lighter than the M235i. The body shape has been dictated by aerodynamics, with BMW claiming to have reduced lift by 35 per cent and drag by five per cent.

When it hits the UK market in April 2016, it’ll cost £44,070 for the manual and £46,575 for the auto.

In size and ethos, the M2 is like a spiritual successor to the iconic E30 and E46 M3s of the past, and if BMW can amplify the brilliance of the M235i here, there’s every chance this car could go down in history with its ancestors.
