Remember that huge multi-car pile-up at the Nurburgring a couple of weeks ago? Helmet-cam footage has emerged, and it ain’t purdy.

As the camera car approaches the Hatzenbach Chicane we see a huge cloud of smoke ahead. The driver slows down and pulls to the verge, hops out over the Armco and tries to warn other drivers, but many just blindly keep hammering onwards until it’s too late. Cue agonised tyre-screeching and much shunting.

The track-prepped BMW we were riding in gets punted, too, as a fast-moving Porsche 911 loses it completely and smashes first into another car, then the barriers, then another car and then into the back of the parked 6 Series. Either the German-speaking owner doesn’t notice or stays incredibly calm about it. We’d at least have muttered a pained scheisse.

The footage is a reminder to all of us, on all track days or Nurburgring tourist laps, to leave plenty of margin for error. Expect the worst around every corner and both you and your wheels will probably make it out undamaged.

In fact, he didn’t care for his car…He mumbled “scheißegal” (~matters as much as shit) as he saw his car getting smahed. He risked his life and his car, tryin to prevent worse things from happening. Hes a real hero

He’s not a hero at all. As Nurburgring regulations state, in the event of an accident incoming drivers should never stop or get out of their cars. Doing so only provides more dangerous obstacles for the rest of fast incoming traffic coming from behind, making the situation even more dangerous and potentialy deadly.
Good samaritan instincts are understandable but they are not always the right approach.

The lack of reaction seeing his car get hit was very impressive/surprising. Glad to finally see what happened to that E36 and how it got so damaged, but gutted to see how many innocent drivers and cars were caught up in this, when pulling over to try to help.

Hmmm maybe they need a warning system. Like a set of gantry lights and a big red button so that when theres a crash, it warns people like half a mile in advance. If you see a crash you could hit the button instead of having to waive your arms.

Or you know if there was actually a sodding marshal in position to yellow flag folk… but nope. Nowhere to be seen.

It’s a wonder no one was killed. Some of those were hefty smashes.

Agreed. With the amount of money the Nurburgring must make there’s no excuse. Should have an electronic flag system monitored by cameras.

This guy is a hero, getting out, over the barrier and trying to warn others. Where are the marshals and yellow flags??
