The Toyota Supra Has Appeared In Another Racing Teaser

Before the road car’s official – and long, long-awaited – arrival, the Supra is appearing once more as a racer

Well, it’s not the road-going Supra yet, but it’s one more statement of how serious Toyota is about the Supra – it’s going racing in yet another class.

The Gazoo Racing Supra Super GT Concept is set for a debut at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon, and judging by what little we can see from the dark, low-resolution image, it’s going to be pretty aggressive.

The large rear wing is par for the course but our eyes are drawn to what seems to be a huge, flat-topped rear wheel arch at the back of a traditional red and white/silver Toyota colour scheme. There’s a hefty functional diffuser at the back for extra downforce – but it won’t be on the road car.

It’s not the first – or even the second – racing-style Supra to have been revealed so far. The first was the Gazoo Racing Supra nine months ago. More recently we’ve had the Nascar Xfinity Series-spec example, modified heavily and barely recognisable as per the pic below.

Keep your eyes peeled on 11 January for the full Super GT Concept reveal. We’ll have to wait for the Detroit show a day or two later to finally lay eyes on the Japanese sports car everyone has been talking about (increasingly impatiently) for what seems like years. Repeat after us: only a month… only a month…

I’ve been saying that for ages, I can’t even remember when the talk about this supra began, we’ve been seeing clues about it’s design for years. Look at mclaren, they say they’re making a car and not long after it’s done and we usually don’t even know much about it before launch. I hope I’m wrong but I think when the supra launches people will be : mehh. Especially if you take into consideration that the expectations about the supra for most people are based on modified ones and not the actual stock supra.

Overhype |verb :
An anticipation of which expectations
reach beyond any possible deliverance.

ex. : “See mom, the Supra IS going to revive
all of my nostalgia enhanced memories !”

Heavily modified? The Xfinity Supra shares nothing other than name with the Supra. Its a NASCAR tube fram underneath.

I genuinely feel that the new supra is gonna be a flop no matter how good it is. Too much nostalgia, too much hype, too much secrecy and delays. Expectations are way too high for a 350-ish Hp japanese GT car with no manual to even remotely deliver, and that’s a shame because it might have been good if it wasnt called supra

They could have called it celica and it would have been fine. But nope

Only time will tell if it’s a flop, but I really disagree on not calling it a Supra. It’s a curvy Toyota coupe with RWD and a turbo 6 cylinder that you can tune the crap out of, not to mention it’ll surely blow any older Supra out of the water when it comes to handling. But we all know numbers and reason aren’t everything when it comes to cars.
