Guess what - it’s another limited-edition Toyota 86! This one’s bound for the US, hence the lack of ‘GT’ in the name, and before you ask - no, it doesn’t have any more power than the standard model.

It’s called the Hakone Edition, so called because it’s a vehicular celebration of Hakone Turnpike, a challenging toll road south-west of Tokyo.

Finished in ‘Hakone green’ and sitting on 17-inch “twisted spoke” bronze wheels, it looks rather familiar. There’s a good reason why - what you’re looking here is best thought of as a US version of the JDM-only British Green Limited 86.

The interior is much the same, too, featuring two-tone tan/black Alcantara seats. There’s a tan Toyota 86 logo embroidered into the passenger side of the dash, and contrast stitching liberally spread around the cabin. As a finishing touch, Hakone Edition 86s will also be supplied with tan key fob covers. Lovely.

As far as equipment goes, you’ll find dual-zone climate control, heated seats, cruise control and a ‘Smart Key System’ all fitted as standard.

Up front you’ll find the usual 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated boxer-four, putting out 201bhp and 156lb ft. Opt for the automatic instead of the six-speed manual, and that drops to 196bhp and 151lb ft.

We don’t know how much it costs yet, but Toyota has revealed that the Hakone Edition will be available from Autumn 2019 for the 2020 model year.

Half life 3 might have a better chance of being released than an 86 with a power increase

The thing is, why increase the power? The “cheap and low powered” car then becomes either a semi-powerfull, semi expensive car or a high power high price car. The soul of the car is somewhat lost.

I’m more annoyed by the torque hole in the rev range than 200hp (it’s more than the miata)

I agree that it needs more power. Toyota said they couldn’t figure out how to put a turbo in the engine bay but they never even considered a rear mount kit.

Change the exhaust and you’ve got your power boost

It is never getting more power because they signed a treaty to not raise it. Stop shouting at toyota/subaru about it because if you want more power, do it yourself

It depends if the brown is part of the car or as a result of driving the car.

They chose the slowest car for one of the fastest roads in the country. Oh the irony.

now, we can all realize that 100 different versions of “special edition” actually make the these editions less “special”
