The Tesla Model 3 Has Just One Display, And It's Not In Front Of The Driver

Being able to quickly glance at your road and engine speeds, fuel level or engine temperatures is taken for granted, but Tesla seems to want to make it a whole lot more difficult
The Tesla Model 3 Has Just One Display, And It's Not In Front Of The Driver

Fans of common sense should look away now. The Tesla Model 3 is going to have no displays other than a giant tablet device attached to the middle of the dashboard.

That means no speedometer, rev counter, fuel gauge, temperature gauges or even a damn clock in front of the driver. Elon Musk has confirmed that all the Model 3’s readouts will be confined to the central screen, which could easily be compromised by glare in daylight.

Anyone who’s driven an old Citroen C4, or another car that relocates the crucial info away from the driver, will know what a colossal ballache this can be. It takes longer to read the necessary data, turns your eyes away from the road and just feels… wrong.

Tesla is making the move to boost the futuristic, minimalist interior feel of the new Model 3, focusing on providing a layout that works for Autopilot mode, but in the process it sacrifices the everyday practicality of having multiple dials and screens. It could even be down to cost-cutting as Tesla scrambles to make a profit.

Tweets from Elon Musk also confirm that the Model 3 won’t be getting a head-up display of any kind, either. It means drivers really will have to deal with just the one screen, which, when the sun is in the wrong place, will be completely illegible. Is it just us, or is this an astonishingly bad idea if you’re driving the car yourself?

Maybe he’s trying to force people to use Autopilot when they get tired of looking?

No one whined in the 1960s when Ford did it with the GT. People just like to hate Tesla

Well, that means the central screen is central to the car…

To be honest, if it had a HUD, I could live without the dials/screen behind the steering wheel

I can’t begin to tell you how little I care about Tesla now. At this point, it’s a tech company trying to be like Apple disrupting the cell phone market but with the cars, however Chevy has beaten them to market with a solid EV for the masses… hell, every other car maker has and still no one is actually buying electric cars - except people buying Teslas because it has novelty cache over a Porsche in LA or San Fransisco.

That’s the problem with today’s world. People buy products for their logo rather than the genuine quality OF that product. Apple, Tesla, even Ralph Lauren are all at fault of this…

Well, except for Fisker, there is no other (kind of) luxury brand offering full EV with that much range. People are buying a great range and overall quality for less money than a model s or x. Some people just want that without going for a full 5 meters long car ;)

There’s a real different between “no one is actually buying” and “nobody wants”. Let’s pretend for a second that I want a Bolt. Tough. I can’t get one. Why, it is released, right? It is “available”, right? Nope. It isn’t. Except in a few select markets, it simply isn’t. And never will be. GM has no interest in actually selling an EV. They only make it for appearances and (mostly) for eco credits to be legally allowed to sell more huge gas sucking trucks and SUVs. GM does NOT provide an electric car at this time. Same thign with Ford. Want an electric Focus? Sure, so do I! Website says I can have it. Dealer… says no, not any time soon anyway. Ford does NOT provide an electric car at this time. Not really. Nobody does except for Nissan. Sure, Mitsubishi kind of does and there’s that electric Smart car thing… but none of those (including the Leaf) offer the kind of range that makes it practical for most people.

Tesla - with the Model 3 - is the ONLY company that will offer a good range at a reasonable price, and won’t be doing it purely for show.

Yes, I wanted a HUD. Yes, I wanted some cool gadgetry that I guess I won’t be getting. But mostly I want a Tesla. And that has nothing to do with the brand. I don’t want to own a Tesla because I’m a “fan boy”. I want to own a Tesla because I want to support the only company in the world (of any consequence) that is attempting to make a difference.

Because, face it. Nobody wants a Chevy Bolt. You may not think it is, but people buy a Tesla for the same reason they’d by a Porsche. It’s something special.
And if something disrupts the market like the iPhone does, you can make every single objective argument about the product at hand is bad — yet, it’s then illogically successful? Then you argue that people are stupid for buying such a bad product.

Well, the product has accomplished its goal of selling well. The product is very good at that. Therefore, it is a good product. Because a product’s “good-ness” is really determined by how the product is perceived by its potential customers.

You mean Apple, the company that invented the smart phone so they could be first to market with useable tablets?

Or Apple, the company that figured out no one actually needed floppy disk drive anymore and got rid of it despite the protests and being ridiculed… then everyone went quiet as Apple basically said “I told you so?”

That Apple?

So does that mean you won’t be allowed to use it when your driving because that would be considered as an offence to driving while using a mobile phone? :/
