The Scion FR-S Won't Become The 'Toyota FR-S' After All

In February, Toyota announced that the Scion brand - first launched in 2003 - was going to be killed off. All models bar the tC are due to live on and be rebadged as Toyotas from the 2017 model year onwards, and the last time we asked Toyota USA, we were told the FR-S badge would be retained. But, it would seem the company’s plans have changed.

On the Toyota Driver’s Seat blog, it was mentioned that: “the FR-S will become the Toyota 86 when it debuts this fall.” That means in North America the rear-drive coupe will be sold under the same name it’s given in Asia, Australia and South America.

It certainly makes a lot more sense than calling it the ‘Toyota FR-S’, since that would give the car four different names worldwide…

I believe what they’re saying is that instead of renaming the Scion FR-S the Toyota FR-S from here on out (in the states), Toyota is just going to call it the Toyota 86. No more FR-S nameplate at all if I understood that correctly.

Am i the only one that thinks the triplets (now twins, i guess) need some more differentiating? Like raher than being the same car, rebadged, there should be different performance aspects to each. Not one above the other, but each evolving down different paths side by side, if that makes sense.

The 86 is different than the GT86 so it’s still triplets it used to be quadruplets

Why not just give it the front end of the FR-S and the back end of the GT86 and call it the FR-86
