The One-Off 'Ole Yeller' Mustang Is A Very 'Murican Shelby GT350

Last week, Aston Martin revealed a Supermarine Spitfire-inspired Vantage which we suggested might be the most British car ever. With that in mind, what’s the most American car? Ford now has a pretty strong contender in the new ‘Ole Yeller’ Mustang. The leading image in the press release even has the car set against a Stars and Stripes background, for pete’s sake.

It’s a one-off special, and like the aforementioned Aston, it’s been created as an homage to a famous fighter plane: the North American P51-D Mustang. But not just any P51-D: it’s intentionally riffing off ‘Ole Yeller’, the wings of choice for legendary aerobatic pilot Bob Hoover.

Based on the Shelby GT350 version of the ‘Stang, the car features a yellow and black paint scheme, ‘Ole Yeller’ script down the side, and a fantastically obnoxious bodykit. Before you ask: no, Hoover’s plane (still flown today by other pilots following the man’s retirement) doesn’t have lurid neon lights - these are a nod to the green accents on the P-51D’s paint scheme.

Other than that, it’s all as-per the standard GT350, which means 519bhp from a flat-plane 5.2-litre V8 plus beefed up, track-biased suspension.

It’ll be auctioned off on 28 July at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) AirVenture Oshkosh and will benefit various EAA youth programmes including ‘Young Eagles’, which intends to “grow the next generation of aviators.”

Fancy putting in a bid?

If I had $3 for every time someone posted “I have $3”, I could actually afford the car.

Not to sound picky; but would it have hurt to add a pic or two of the plane it’s based on in the article?
