The Next 911 GT2 RS Will Have 'Way More Power' But Be Less Scary, Says Porsche

Because 611bhp clearly isn't enough to keep you interested, Porsche has confirmed that the next GT2 RS will have at the very least 641bhp, but probably much more...

The new Porsche 911 GT2 RS will pack more than 641bhp and 553lb ft, but according to the magazine that got hold of the figures, it could end up much higher than that.

Evo is reporting that Porsche’s engineers are treating those figures as ‘fairly conservative’, with the homologated final output likely to be a step higher. Porsche itself says the car has ‘way more power’ than the old version…

The expectation, the magazine makes out, is that the final numbers might be a bit bonkers. Don’t rule out a sub-seven-minute Nurburgring lap time, either.

Bonkers is definitely one word you could use to describe GT2 RSs of days gone by, with the highest power outputs of any production 911 linked to rear-wheel drive and a terrifying impatience for fools. The decade-old 997 GT2 RS would crack 0-100mph in 6.8 seconds and spin a loop of the Nurburgring in just 7m18s, with ‘just’ 611bhp at its disposal.

That’s set to get even crazier. The engineers are said to be targeting sub-3.0-second 0-62mph sprints and a 0-124mph blast in less than nine. For heavy-breathing reference that would be a full second (or more) faster than the current Audi R8 V10 Plus.

Most of the sub-1500kg car’s parts are taken either from the Turbo models or the GT3 RS, but the engineers are clear that it’s not just a breathed-on Turbo S, telling the magazine that it’s a completely re-engineered car. There’s also a number of GT2 RS-specific components that should improve strength, reliability, performance or all three.

There’s a pair of larger turbos running at higher boost pressures, for starters, revised engine internals and a lightweight titanium exhaust system, which we’d bet our left arms will sound brilliant. The suspension is apparently transplanted from a 911 Cup racing car, with upside-down race dampers and rose joints. The front spring rates are said to be double those of the GT3, so focused seems to be the polite way to put it.

That said, development boss Andreas Preuninger is quoted as saying that this one should be easier to drive than older GT2 RSs.

“I like this absolute brutal power that this has, but it’s a joy to drive on the track, it’s so precise, it’s so nimble and agile and a lot easier to drive than a 997 GT2 RS, which was a brute, to the point where you couldn’t handle it sometimes. This one has more power, way more power.”

Well, it’s all relative but we think it still sounds like it’s going to be a tyre-smoking maniac, which is exactly how it should be.

A manual rarely is a good idea on a 650+ hp car 😂
