The New Toyota Supra Will Get A Four-Cylinder Engine

Toyota’s Chief Engineer for the new Supra has confirmed that a BMW six-pot won’t be the only power option
The New Toyota Supra Will Get A Four-Cylinder Engine

Toyota has confirmed that a lighter, cheaper four-cylinder engine option will be made available for the new Supra.

The heavily BMW-based car will add the German marque’s B48B20 turbocharged four-cylinder unit to the B58B30 blown six-pot lump we’ve talked about before.

The New Toyota Supra Will Get A Four-Cylinder Engine

Although clearly down on power, with a reported 261bhp versus the six-cylinder car’s 335bhp, comments from Tetsuya Tada – the Supra’s chief engineer – at the Goodwood Festival of Speed suggest it will have its own advantages.

In an interview with Road & Track, Tada-san is said to have confirmed not just that a four-banger is on the way, but also that it will be lighter, with better weight distribution and a sharper turn-in. Both engines will use ZF’s eight-speed automatic gearbox, but it’s still unconfirmed as to whether it’s the only option.

It seems Toyota is also thinking about fans of the old A80 Supra. Road & Track says Tada-san recommended that anyone wanting to swap-in a 2JZ engine should go for the four-cylinder car, both for the financial saving and because it represents less bulk to remove from the engine bay.

That also indicates that the two powerplants shouldn’t be linked to wildly different chassis components with, for example, significant spec advantages for the more powerful car. After all these teasers, let’s hope the wait for full details isn’t too much longer.

4 cyl means it’s not a true Supra
Just like the 2.3 Ecoboost is not a true Mustang

Well the fact that most of the bits are from BMW including the 6 doesn’t exactly help that mantra either

Times in the Japanese sports car industry appear to have changed (thanks to a couple of economic crises). It’s seems less about ‘homegrown heroes defeat all’ and more ‘making the money go far’
(Think about the NSX- it’s development barely planted a foot in Japan; it’s an Acura through and through)

Also remember Toyota owes you nothing. They’re building a product that has to sell. They’re not aiming for fans of the A80, they’re aiming for people with actual money who might be in the market for say, a 718 or 911.

Unfortunate as it is, as a wise man once said “And that’s the wayyyy the news goes”

Mustangs had six cylinders at first - which, if you consider what they were represented as in the range in 1964/5, are the equivalent of 4 cylinders in today’s world.

Mustangs are still true Mustangs - even with smaller engines.

I really hope not. A 261hp 4cyl sports car is probably worth £45k on a good day. And even then most people would probably opt for a base 718 or TTS. If I wanted a 4cyl sports car I’d have bought a GT86.

That’s a good thing. You can get the car for less money and then swap another engine, if you don’t like the bmw engine. I can see someone making a lot of money from transmission adaptors for that 8 speed auto. Damn… If i had the money…

So they encourage swapping out the 4-banger….
What would be engineered first: 2JZ or LS swap?

Both good options, I’m glad Toyota is actually one of the only Japanese manufacturers to acknowledge that people will swap the original piece of shit out lol
