It was confirmed by Seat over a year ago, but at last, the estate version of the Leon Cupra R is here. It’ll be a very different beast to drive, however, as unlike the front-wheel drive R hatchback, the Leon Cupra R ST is only available with four-wheel drive.

It doesn’t develop quite as much power, either, with its EA888 engine producing 296bhp versus the hatch’s 306bhp. You can thank WLTP for that.

It does have a similar carbonfibre and copper theme going on, at least. The wheels, Seat badges, bumper vents and more are finished in copper, while the front splitter, boot spoiler, mirror caps, side skirts and rear diffuser are each made from carbonfibre.

The carbon/copper thing continues inside, where you’ll also find that the steering wheel and gear selector are, perhaps inevitably, clad in Alcantara. You’ll note we said gear ‘selector’ - that’s because there’s no manual option here. All R STs will be sold with a seven-speed dual clutch ‘DSG’ gearbox.

In terms of the chassis, it broadly mirrors the standard ST Cupra’s, although the R does get new front suspension uprights, increasing the negative camber. The Brembo brakes are new, too.

It should be well equipped, with keyless entry, a reversing camera and the ‘Connectivity Box’ options already being promised as standard equipment. You’ll be able to spec it in either Magnetic Tech, Midnight Black, Nevada White or Blackness Grey, the latter being an exclusive colour for the R.

UK pricing will be revealed on Wednesday. To give you some idea of how much it might cost, the hatchback was £34,995, meaning the ST could weigh in at a similar price to ‘our’ Cupra Ateca, which is powered by the same engine and has a similar love of copper bits and pieces.
