The Morgan EV3 Is A Bonkers Blend Of Modern Electric Power And Ancient Car Design

Other than the fact it scoots about on three wheels, the 3 Wheeler's exposed V-twin engine is what makes it so epically cool - does it still have charm in EV mode?

We reckon the standard Morgan 3 Wheeler is one of the most fun cars ever made. It unashamedly puts driver enjoyment at the forefront of its design, with the peppy 2.0-litre V-twin engine thrumming away out front being one of the key reasons it’s so much fun.

Well now there’s a new tripod on the block, with the engine ditched in favour of an electric motor. The EV3 will be bespoke to order, and will be handcrafted by Morgan’s band of highly-skilled engineers. The electric motor will be mounted at the rear, making 75kw - or 100bhp in old money - which makes it more powerful than the standard car by about 20bhp, and lighter as well at 450kg. Range is expected to be about 150 miles.

Without the engine, or associated lairy exhaust pipes that are usually flanking the car, the 3 Wheeler looks like an old school vision of the future; a shiny capsule of what people in the old days thought cars might look like today. It might lose a little of its quirky charm, but that’s replaced with a sleek coolness to the design.

The car is currently in the prototype stage, and will make its public debut this week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
