The BMW M2 Could Get A Massive Power Hike Thanks To An M4 Engine Transplant

Rumours have circulated about a hardcore version of the already capable M2, which could bear the M2 CSL name. It’d be a baby version of the M4 GTS, and now German publication Bimmer Today has got an inside scoop of the track-focused baby M car. And it seems set to get one hell of a power boost.

The M2 CS will look to emulate the M4 GTS as a track-focussed road car

Known as the M2 CS (Club Sport), the car will use a detuned version of the M4’s S55 engine. This means that power outputs will be around 400bhp - 25bhp down on the likes of the M3 and M4 but 35bhp up on the standard M2 road car. With release estimated to be some time in 2018, the CS will also exploit the M4 GTS’s suspension setup to make for a seriously competitive rival to the likes of the Audi TT RS.

Its cool and all but i think it would have just been better if the M2 had its own engine, just makes it more unique.

M2s motor sounds better aswell imo

I totally agree. But when it comes to the sound I’d like to mention something too.
In my opinion the current M3 (M4) doesn’t sound that good. It kinda reminds me on a bumblebee on steroids. I prefer the previous’ generations more. But somehow they managed to make an M2 sound sooo much nicer and I personally don’t think that it’s just the lack of a turbo compared to it’s bigger brother or sister. Must be some kind of ///M agic going on.

I can make an M2 CS for half (I’m guessing) for what they charge straight from the factory

Hmm, honestly not turned on the slightest bit. In my opinion, the M2 has got enough power and most important it sounds way better than the M4.

So the Peking order goes…
M4 GTS>M4/M3>M2 CS>M2
But we all know if they put the standard 425hp M4 engine in the M2 it has the potential to be the fastest car in the bunch.

It also has the potential to be the best car they’ve made in a long while (maybe already is?). The M3 and upwards are fine cars, more than fine, but they’re becoming huge, unnecessary packages, closer to GTs than sports cars - as are many modern saloon cars. The M2 is a brilliant size, chassis, and the addition of more and more performance packs and bigger engines will make it an absolute gem, not just in the current market but in history. Imagine an E46 M3 size package with 400bhp + from the factory and all the modern refinements and technologies (in terms of drivetrain, suspension, chassis) that go hand in hand - that is what drivers want. Not a 2-door 7 series, which is what the M4 is approaching in relative size and coldness.

For an analogy - if this was Porsche, this is the Cayman GT4, but if the 911 GT3 was good but kind of dull and they’d the same engine… Hmm. At least Porsche have the sense to make the 911 still more of a car than the Cayman.

I like the idea - if you want to go fast, why carry extra weight? small car with big engine will be more agile

I’d still pick the original, because it sounds absolutely awesome, better than the M3. But the Alpina B3 sounds even better.
