Aston Martin has revealed a drop-top 'Volante' version of the new Vanquish S, which will surely be one of the greatest tunnel running cars of our time...

If you were to ask us which of the cars we drove in 2016 sounded the best, the answer would be easy: it’s the Aston Martin Vanquish S.

Gaydon’s ageing but glorious 5.9-litre V12 sounds better than ever in the tweaked Vanq thanks to a new stainless steel exhaust, and now, you have the option of lopping the roof off to soak up even more N/A noise.

It’s powered by the same 595bhp, lightly fettled 5.9-litre V12 as found in the coupe, and has that all-important new quad-exhaust we like so much. As with the coupe, it also gets new gearbox software for the eight-speed ZF-sourced, transaxle-mounted automatic, plus revised suspension.

Further mirroring the coupe, the Volante S has been treated to a smattering of carbonfibre trim pieces, including a new rear diffuser and front splitter sections.

There’s no word on how much it’ll cost just yet, but expect a small bump over the £199,950 charged for the coupe.

Not only does it sound good, the looks are equally stunning. In my humble opinion this beats the new DB by looks alone…

I don’t really like this at all. Compared to the original DB9 (which this still is), it feels like an overblown caricature of itself.

The classyness and quiet elegance of the original has eroded over the years, and now it’s become just an overly styled footballer’s car. If I’d be fortunate enough to have the choice I know what I’d buy.

Interesting opinion, as much as I adore the DB9, I just can’t stop drooling over the Volante. It stands out from the crowd of Huracan’s and 488’s and McLaren’s, it’s by no means meant to be the fastest car ever and I think the design features are spot on. The only complaint I have about the design is that I find it a tad, a smudge too sporty and too blown out. I feel like it’s kind of overdone and it could use some simplicity.

Hmm, I must proceed to disagree, I wasn’t really a fan of the DB9 at all, the design of it got dated rather quick to me. I felt it chintzy and quite boring, This Vanquish S Volante I think is a slight breath of fresh air, the rear especially has been much changed and looks very different from all other Astons.

At least we can thank Aston for finally diversifying the looks of their lineup, the DB9 era cars all looked way too similar.

I have always thought of the Vanquish of the most beautiful car on sale today. This is me when I found it was available as a convertible.
