The 986 Boxster Has Been Granted 'Classic' Status By Porsche

The 986 Boxster Has Been Granted 'Classic' Status By Porsche

Arguably one of the least loved of all Porsches, the 986 Boxster, has been granted a kind of protected status by its maker.

Porsche has confirmed that the original Boxster will benefit from official parts, specialist Porsche-trained restorers and official restomod upgrades, and it’s bringing a special run of 10 examples to the NEC Classic Motor Show to prove it.

The 986 Boxster Has Been Granted 'Classic' Status By Porsche

All are Boxster S examples and all have been brushed-up to varying degrees of restomod spec to highlight the job that can be done by Porsche dealers and ‘Recommended Repairers’ using official parts. Each has been painted in Liquid Metal Silver, the colour pretty much owned by the 918 Spyder.

A bespoke interior maintains the standard set by the flawless paint job. The 10 Porsche-sanctioned resto-Boxsters each also feature a plaque noting their status. That’s quite a nice touch for 10 cars that, for all we know, had become a bit unloved. You can see them at Birmingham’s NEC from 9 November.

Right now, you can get a working 986 Boxster for just £3k. I think now is the time to buy, before they double-quadruple in price.

Disagree strongly. The Boxster is subtly cool to look at. It’s not shouty about its styling, and back then it was quite an appealing car. It just didn’t age well to our modern eyes, but it’s a car that will easily be a good looking car in the future again.

It’s no FIAT Multipla…

Everyone talk about how terrible and ugly this car is, but doubt any of them have ever driven one. I have driven them before and I really don’t care how it looks or how fast it is, because its such a blast to drive. It’s kind of like a Miata, People talk bad about it and make fun of it until they drive it and realize how much fun it is.

And it deserves it. It’s a pared-back, pure driving experience, the likes of which are missing nowadays

I have a 987.2 Cayman and drive tons of other Porsche’s on a daily basis. Anyone claiming the dynamics of these cars is anything but awesome is wrong. My .02
