The $35k Tesla Model 3 Is Finally On Sale

The entry-level, $35,000 version of Tesla's electric 3-series rival is at last here
The $35k Tesla Model 3 Is Finally On Sale

It’s finally here! That tempting $35,000 entry point to the Tesla Model 3 range which has been talked about for years has finally gone on sale. And although it’s now the entry-level model, there’s nothing ‘entry-level’ about the performance of the new Model 3 ‘Standard Range’.

It’ll hit 60mph from rest in just 5.6 seconds, and go on to a top speed of 130mph. In terms of range, it’s good for up to 220 miles. It doesn’t come with the Autopilot driver assistance system, but it’ll be possible for owners to upgrade further down the line. It’ll have only a cloth interior, a fancy panoramic glass roof is part of the standard spec.

If you’re willing to pay $37,000, you’ll be able to get yourself into a ‘Standard Range Plus’, which has a 240-mile range, a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds, and a 140mph top speed. The next step up is the existing Mid Range Model 3 with a 264-mile range and a $40,000 price tag.

To put that in some sort of context, the Polestar 2, set to be the Model 3’s closest rival, will be $55,500 for the fully-loaded launch edition car - a little less than a Model 3 Performance. There will, however, be a lower-priced 2 which should come in closer to the price of the Mid Range Model 3.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter that the lower-priced 3 will arrive in Europe in around six months’ time, landing in Asia in about six to eight months depending on the status of the Shanghai Gigafactory.

Coinciding with the Model 3 Standard Range reveal, Musk also announced that Tesla is shifting to online sales only. Many of the company’s existing stores will be re-purposed to act as showcases for Tesla products, but some will be closing with job losses.

In a bid to replace traditional test drives, Tesla is now offering customers a penalty-free refund within a week or a 1000 miles of delivery.

I never thought I’d say this but I’m impressed with what they’ve managed to do. Let’s hope the build quality hasn’t suffered with the massive increase in production.

With the Model 3 now in legitimate mass production all the kinks with the early ones are probably sorted out by now

This or the Bolt?

With the Bolt you get a car that is manufactured by a company that knows how to build cars. Teslas will be rust buckets in 10 years. Just look at that Norvegian guys model X. Has some kind of paint bubble up on both rear doors and the rear wing pillars.

37,000 for an electric car. I will never own an electric car but this is not a bad price.

This is before incentives, EPA will take $7,500 off the price tag in some states

I absolutely despise electric cars’ design and abundance of nanny tech, but I’d totally daily a classic car with a P100D drivetrain swap, like the Teslonda.

Rich Rebuilds donated a Tesla drivetrain to a widebody classic 911, its pretty cool
