The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS Accelerates As Fast As The Old Z/28, Because It's Less Of A Fatty

With less weight and more power, there wasn’t any doubt that the new Camaro would be a fair bit quicker than the old one. Now official performance figures have been revealed, we have our chance to see just how much quicker.

Naturally it’s the SS which grabbed our attention first. Power and torque from the 6.2-litre V8 is at 449bhp and 455lb ft up from 420bhp in the old one. This - plus the 101kg drop in weight - means the SS will dispatch the 0-60mph sprint in four seconds dead (with the eight-speed auto fitted), exactly the same as the official time for the old Z/28. Not bad. Fancy taking one to the local strip? You can expect to run a 12.3 second quarter-mile.

If you go a little further down the pecking order, the stats are still jolly impressive. The 271bhp 2.0-litre turbo four-banger hits 60mph from rest in 5.4 seconds and can clock a 14 second quarter, while the 330bhp, 3.6-litre V6 does the same in 5.1 and 13.5 seconds respectively.

Want one? You’ll need $26,695 for the Camaro 1LT, rising to $37,295 for the SS when the range goes on sale soon.
