Take A Look At The Ever-So-Slightly Curvier New Audi A5 Cabriolet

The A5 Cabriolet might be the last A5 to be revealed in pictures, but it brings with it an interesting weight cut and more curvaceous lines than before

Behold the new Audi A5 Cabriolet, the last member of the A5 family to be revealed. It and the V6-powered S5 are now set for their 2017 launch.

The styling has been tweaked away from the straight, stoic lines of the old car and more towards a flowing look that makes us think of the Fiat 124 Spider more than anything else.

As you’d expect, most of the specs mirror those of the A5 coupe, but the most obvious change is the multi-layer acoustic fabric roof, which opens in 15 seconds and closes in 18. Both can be actioned at up to 31mph.

Extra struts to stiffen the chassis make the car heavier than the coupe, but Audi claims a 40kg cut versus the old A5 Cab. That’s half a passenger, so should make a slight but welcome difference to the handling and performance.

As for engines, it’s familiar fodder. Four will be available from launch, spanning a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol, a 2.0-litre TDI diesel with 187bhp and two 3.0-litre range-toppers in petrol and diesel. The S5’s 349bhp V6 will power the car to 62mph in 5.1 seconds, Audi says, but there’s potential for 22 per cent greater efficiency.

Elsewhere the boot is now an impressive 380 litres even with the roof down, with a 50/50 split rear bench seat that folds to allow longer loads in the boot.

And if you’re wondering, yes, that tablet-like screen is standard. You can upgrade the basic seven-inch unit to an 8.3-inch widescreen, if you wish, as part of an options list as long as your arm. Don’t expect any of this to come cheap, either. We’ll find out over the next few months.
