See The Ford GT's Amazing Aero Package At Work During Wind Tunnel Testing
The new Ford GT's dramatic looks are all down to a range of extreme and very much functional aero devices. With that in mind, it's fascinating to see how the air flows over the GT during wind tunnel testing
There are multiple bits of aero design you can see at work here. Firstly, there’s the active rear wing, which when retracted can give extra downforce, as well as having the ability to tilt and act as an air brake. There’s the moveable flap at the front that dictates how much air is sent to the rear diffuser, and we also get a good look at the flying buttresses which aid airflow to the clever wing. And you thought the new Honda NSX was geeky…

THIS. This is what motivates me to be a mechanical engineer and to work on aerodynamics!
Also, this test seems much more focused on pure demonstration rather than actual aerodynamic testing. You can notice this because there is no moving ground to prevent the formation of a boundary layer that shouldn’t be there (a boundary layer is a thin layer of air in which viscosity has an effect on its speed and behavior. As a car is moving relative to the ground, there shouldn’t be any boundary layer above the ground, only just below the car’s untertray). Without a moving ground or some device to prevent this boundary layer from forming, any downforce/drag measured would be incorrect. Hence, this test would be good for 1-demonstration, 2-noise testing (as the guy in the video says) or 3-evaluation of cooling and vibrations.
Still, what a lovely sight this GT’s aero.
