Sebastian Vettel Had A Bizarre Crash After The Malaysian GP Finished

After his car broke down in qualifying, Sebastian Vettel did a great job to go from last to fourth in the Malaysian Grand Prix. But just because the race had finished that didn’t mean the drama was over for him.

Once the chequered flag had fallen he was cruising back to the pits when he somehow managed to collide with the Williams of Lance Stroll, ripping the rear wheel of his car off and leaving him stranded out on the circuit.

Luckily for Sebastian, he didn’t have to walk all the way back to the pits as Pascal Wehrlein kindly stopped and gave him a lift back on the sidepod of his Sauber, which was cool to see. After all, who doesn’t love to see an F1 taxi ride?!

The race itself was won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, whose season of torrid luck dramatically turned around when he passed Lewis Hamilton for the lead on lap four and simply cruised off into the distance.

Hamilton held on to finish second whilst Daniel Ricciardo completed the podium in third. Valtteri Bottas had a terrible race, finishing in fifth behind Sebastian Vettel and way, way behind teammate Hamilton.

Before the race Kimi Raikkonen was a strong favourite to challenge for victory, but he didn’t get to turn a single lap in anger as his car developed a problem on the grid and he was out before the race had even started.

Verstappen took a classy victory just one day after his 20th birthday …

Although he wasn’t able to convert his pole into a victory, Hamilton has extended his championship lead over Vettel to 34 points with five races left to run. With the Mercedes and the Ferrari so evenly matched it’s still anyone’s championship though, and bad luck could yet play a part for either driver.

Vettel could have to take a bit more pain soon though, as that strange post-race crash with Stroll could have damaged the Ferrari’s gearbox. That would mean a five-place grid penalty for Vettel at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka next week - not ideal for the man with all the work to do in the title chase!
